Will not go in gear

Recommended Posts

I started my bike the usuall way and let it warm up but when i tried to put it in gear nothing happened. The shift lever still springs up and down but without any detent. It won't go in gear with or without the engine running. I will say that I had a bad crash a couple of weeks ago and had to replace bars, front fender, left side shroud and radiator but I started the bike and rode it about two miles then shut it down until today. Everthing felt fine till I tried to put it in gear NOTHING. Help!

The same thing happened to me with only 4 miles on my bike. It was a nut inside the tranny that had backed off. I dont know wich one it was sinse i took it in under warranty but from what the dealer said it was an easy fix. Is your bike a 00 model i think several of them had this problem.

Sounds like the bike landed hard on left side. Maybe this pushed shift shaft to the right and off of the roller and arm that connects to the shift drum. I’m not certain this is even possible but with the cover off it is easy to push the shaft off in this manner.

At any rate you are probably going to have to yank the right cover to determine what has happened here. If I guessed right you will be back in business shortly.

My advice would be to avoid crashing in the future. ?

Hope this helps!

I had this very same problem with my 00 WR. It cost me $300 bucks to repair it since I was 5 days out of warranty. The bike only had 52 miles on it. I called Yamaha and they told me to bad warranty expired. I had a few choice words for Yamaha so they told the bike shop where I had it fixed not to help me with anything anymore. The bike shop stripped out my oil drain plug during the repair and decided to blam it on me. I hadn't even changed the oil in the bike yet, they did. Lots of down time with my purchase of a WR. My next new bike won't be a Yamaha.

smrmx,

I have heard about this and read about this but, sadly, I still don’t know what everybody is talking about. Yours is the most detailed description I have heard so far. It sounds like you are talking about the dowel that holds the spring on the end of the shift shaft (?)

The other stuff I have read about this pressed in pin (wherever it is) made it sound like it was somewhere at the other end of things, I assumed it was the liitle shaft with a roller that fits over it. The lever portion of the shift shaft inside the right case rides on this roller and rotates the shift drum.

So could you or someone else point me in the right direction here? I already have my cases apart and would like to do a preventative part swap but I need to know the part with the disappearing pin. It would be great if someone could reply with the reference number from the link below:

Thanks!
