I would not be so happy to admire a bike that blew every 180-190 miles as they said. Not practical in any way on 500-1000 miles race. 6 engines changes to complete the race...But it was a nice bike and maybe if they would have cast some better casing or in different material alloy it would have been a monters Xr.

"The problem was that the engine would blow up like clock work somewhere between 180-190 miles. The engine was designed as an XR500, then grew to a 600, so we were really pushing the envelope at 680cc. After that, we toned down the Baja motors and settled on a 105-106 mph motorcycle that could go the distance."

Still a beast/monster.

I wonder how it would compare to the last generation xr650r 1x bike? I think they top out around 115 mph. I'm not sure if the new CRF 1x is as fast as that.

I had my 94 up to 110mph. I might have gotten a little more but lost my nerve when the tires started to protest. It was stock bore (at the time)with all the bolt on mods and 15/45 gearing. I could not amagine doing 100+ in the dirt. Man has got more nuts than I do  and I run into burning buildings for a living.

It's not that hairy until you have to stop in a hurry like when the trail is washed out ahead of you.

Exactly, that fairing is the first one I've ever seen on an off road bike that looked decent!
