Road gearing?

Hi Guy's,

I'm taking my 650R off the dirt for a while, and will be useing it for Sunday morning blasts with my buddies.
I'll be keeping the stock rims, but putting road rubber on them.

What gearing have you found to work best to give good road legs?

15 X 45 or 14 x 42

14/48 as far as I know

15-45 works, but if I ran roads exclusively, I'd go even taller

can you run a smaller front and larger back than stock (14 48) for road use but keep some torqueness?

15X45 on my xrr....use it 50/50...the bikes got so much torque that i have no problem at all riding off road with that gearing...the one problem is that i cant get it our of 3rd!!! its too f-in fast in the dirt with that gearing (i ride tight woods now).

on the road you can still roll it up into a wheelie in 2nd @~35 and 3rd @~45-50mph

Mine had a 14-39 on it when I bought it. Very tall and no good for trails but perfect for the road.

:thumbsup: I have a 2004 XR650R and I run 15/48, good for roads to get to the dirt. I have run 14/48 tops out at 60-65 on the pavement. Great for the woods though. The 15/48 does good all around.

I think I have tryed just about all comp. of front and rear sprockets on my 93 xr650l this is what I found out. Ok stock on a L is 15/45, stock on a R is 14/48 Lets start with road gears, 15/45 is good for 70 to 75 all day long. you can go a lot faster but the eng. temp will get around 300deg. not good. So if you need to run faster than 75mph for hrs at a time go with 15/42. A 15/45 will get you down a fast fire road with ease but stay off the hills your clutch will last a lot longer. ( note: most eng oils do not work well at temps above 250) I run 14/48 works really good in the dirt,on the road I still can run at 65 easy with oil temp around 230 you can go a lot faster but oil temp go's up. What ever combo. you deside to run keep an eye on your oil temp!!! If it starts to run hot then change your gears.

I have 15/42 on my L. I really like it.

Bike loses some thrust but I like how easy going it is at 70/75mph and when you traveling 100's of miles I'm sure the bike really likes it too.

You like 48 going 70-75 mph ? Maybe you don't cruise at that speed much or do you?

i try to keep it 65-70 and its comfy there. 75... not for superlong distance but it will do it. it also runs cooler up there. the only thing that bothers me is the buzzzzzzzzz!!!!!:thumbsup:

Yea, that would be really bothersome to me too.

You should see sometime how nice a 42 is at 70-75 . :thumbsup:

i will try it. thinking about carrying a spare c. shaft(14 or even a 13) with me so i can swap out at the trailhead. i also tried the expanding foam trick,:lol: DONT try it! that crap kept expanding and getting into my throttle and turn sig. assy for a WEEK! finally got it cleaned up and it hasnt helped much.:bonk: :thumbsup: :lol: :thumbsup: :lol: :busted:

You mean foam in the bars ? :lol:

Thanks for the tip NOT to try it. I don't really get much vibration though :cheers:
