oil change mess

I have been experiencing a real messy problem when I change my oil & filter.

Even if I drain the crankcase and take out the dipstick and the filler plug, when I take out the frame plug the oil is under pressure? and it shoots out and gets all over the front wheel, the floor and anything that is in front of the bike. What am I doing wrong?????? Is this normal?????? OH. yea the bike is a 03 wr450. I don't remember my old wr 400 doing this but maybe it did it too. I am really tired of cleaning the floor after an oil change. HELP!!!!!!

I also have an 03 WR450--what I do to keep from making a mess is to use my automobile oil changing pan (about 24" diameter which is completely open at the top) be sure to start with a completely empty pan and hold it by the handle at a about a 60 degree angle to vertical to catch the oil;make sure the the bike's front wheel is turned full lock to either direction. Just make sure to hold the drain pan in one hand while you remove the drain bolt with the other. Hope this helps.

or cut a hole in the bottom corner of a plastic cup, then let the oil shoot into the wide opening (where you drink from) and let it drain thru the hole you cut out ........ I've also used a one gallon milk/water jug ...... and also have a billy who (but put it where?). .......

It's under gravity pressure!!! Just use anything to shield/deflect it into a pan. Super easy.

That's exactly right! I usually just use a piece of cardboard.

Pull the aluminum tube that goes from the bottom of your frame\oil tank to the right bottom engine case off first. This will drain the frame without even removing the frame drain plug. No mess!!!

Jim, I use a 2 l soda bottle an a tall oragne funnel from Wally World that has one side higher than the other- just put the funnel in the bottle and put the whole works in front of the oil drain. You have to lift the funnel enough to let the air out of the bottle or it will overflow the funnel, but this works great, just drain the oil pan into the bottle too when you're done and it's ready to go to the recycler. I buy oil in gallons so I don't always have an empty bottle ready; this solves that issue also.

Jim I too have a '03 WR450. First if there is enough pressure to literally blow the oil out there is something wrong as mine does not do this. Did you check to make sure your oil filter screen is clean? This is the hex nut which is around 22mm installed to the frame. Do you get a pressure release when removing the oil level check in the upper frame tube? I use a 2" PVC elbow to a short piece of PVC into an automotive drain pan. I have no mess using this method.

The hex nut is 24mm if memory serves me right and mine does the same thing.. if you aint careful it goes everywhere... I usually do like every one else and start at the frame drain hold my empty oil catch at an angle and walla.. ?

I too buy my oil in gallons so I use an old Tide laundry detergent bottle to catch the used oil. It has a nice big open neck and I just hold it up and catch the stream of oil. It only takes a minute or two. Sure there is the odd drip, but that is why I put cardboard down on the floor first.

My problem occurs after that when the oil starts to "dribble" out of the hole and drips down the front of my bike. Any solutions for that?

A rag and some brake cleaner to clean up your mess ?

I allways change my oil when the engine is cold, that way all of the oil is the crank case. There is no need to drain the frame. Every 3rd time I check the screen and it is allways clean. When you change your oil every 200 mi or less there will be no sludge, so no need too warm up.
