I went to my local Yamaha dealer this afternoon and told them that if they can get a tag for a WR450, I'll buy one. They tried to steer me to a KTM. Not happening. Then they said they might be able to do a "2 state transfer". I said get on it and let me know if they can. So we'll see...

I cant really see the big four standing by watching KTM mow though the California street legal enduro market. Can you imagine the marketing manager at Yamaha have to explain to his boss for yet another year why KTM is kicking their butt in California? How many dirt bikes do you think are sold in California compared to the rest of the country? I dont know, but I'm willing to bet that its a significant percentage.

Why are so many heavy, slow, old tech DRZ's still sold???????????? Bingo! 50 state street legal. My buddys laugh at my DRZ and cant understand why I ride it when I have hotter/lighter "real" dirt bikes in the garage, until they see me leave them behind at the boundry of the OHV area and take off across the desert past a "no off highway vehicles beyond this point" sign.:thumbsup: With the advent of the KTM's and Husky's the rest cant be far behind or it would be bad business IMO.

If I were a betting man I would put down cash money that Yamaha and Honda in 2008 will enter the 50 state street legal market.

Sorry the 2008 are not in compliance! was on the phone with the product specialist today had no idea whats going on. But he did say alot of questions as to why they have not gone epa sticker from alot of riders that are pissed off. Maybe someday someone will lose their job for this stupid oversight and then the new guy will get the Brownie Points. Until then we r phucted.:thumbsup:

Please don't get mad at me but am having a lot of trouble figuring what this thread is about.

We have a crf230 that has a sticker on it, and it states on the title "off road use" - don't recall all the exact verbiage...

Is that what you want to change? Have that verbage deleted on the title / MSO & bike stickers so you can you get a lic plate?

EXACTLY...if any one of the big three would pull their head out they would almost put KTM out of business. Just can't figure it out either.

I dont know, I'm still not convinced that it wont happen this year as it appears on the surface that it wouldnt take much to get the WR 50 state street legal. Has any information been at all "leaked out" about the '08 models? The WR is the most likely candidate, its an existing product, durable off road bike, already smogged, throttle stop, etc. Throw on some blinkers and a pipe restriction, lean the hell out of the jetting, throw on some DOT tires, and I bet they could get it to pass the CARB guidelines.

The only thing KTM did was to throw a few extra parts on the '07 EXC's, they did not re-design the bike.

I still cant believe that yamaha has their head in the sand in regards to the CA market. Maybe they are waiting for when they put EFI on the bike or something else. Maybe its a non-issue for them as they are not interested in that part of the market, or the potential sales would not justify the cost?

You should believe it because its happening. Apparently, the market for dual sport bikes is not a big as the market for competition off-road bikes. The biggest sellers these days are green sticker quads and green-sticker trail bikes. I got this from a salesman at a dealership. Dual sports, are still a specialty niche. We don't really want a street bike we can take on the dirt, we want a dirt bike that we can also ride on the street. That's a specialty market.

People are still buying the wr250/450 in droves. Wouldn't a street legal wr450 essentially kill the sales of the existing wr450. They'd be in competition with themselves.

How could you be in competition with yourself when you are still the one selling the bikes? KTM didnt feel that way.The '07 525 EXC is the same competition off-road bike as the 06 but street legal out of the box, pull the cork, rejet, remove the smog, remove throttle stop, presto, regular full on off-raod racing EXC, or in this case WR. A boon for California riders. If every state was like Arizona, we wouldnt be having this discussion.

You are correct, its now obvious to me that the market is not there according to Yamaha. Dont tell that to KTM though.:thumbsup:

Bottom like is, I like the WR, I like the KTM. The CA DMV wont let me plate the WR yet I still have to remove the smog crap, throttle stop, do the free mods for power. The KTM comes out fo the box with a plate - SOLD! Maybe the fact that there are less street legal dirt bikes in CA is a good thing, keeps alot of great trails relatively uncrowded.
