Its the same plug. The drain plug has not changed since before 1996.

I have ran one on my yz 250 since day one. I have never had anything stick to the magnets other than small, dust-like pieces.

Still, not a bad idea to run one.

i hate em.. wont run them anymore...  they are hollow..  and after a few months of torquing, they will bend/twist and snap..   ive gone through 2.. im tired of it..

Dirtkid, your are putting them in too tight. They go up against a soft crush washer that does the work.  To make them tight enough to twist is putting your case in harms way.

I am also thinking it may be better to have a slightly weak bolt that breaks before the case does...

thanks for the reply, RCannon. oddly enough, yamaha has a different part number listed for the stock drain plugs between the 2004 and 2006 models? I guess there is some sort of small, minor difference that does not effect the fitment. thanks again!

Yamaha has two sizes. Make sure the one you get does not fit the ttr 50.  It, and some of the others are different...

I'm going to buy a magnetic drain plug, but as stated above I can only find up to '04. Is there any difference from '04 an up to '09 (which i have).

A bit confusing above

It is confusing...sorry. The 2004 model will be fine.   The part number probably did change, but the plug did not.

And just to add some more fun to this topic, I have heard of YZ owners using Honda drain bolts. :)

The Honda bolts use a very generous 17mm hex head which is far more durable than the - what is it, 14mm? that Yamaha uses.

At one point I was going to swap to a Honda drain bolt, then I learned not to over-torque the YZ stocker and everything has been fine since then. :D
