2nd gear gone bad

i have a 01 400ex with a 02 xr650L engine and i have no second gear i just got it and before i rip it apart id like some ideas on what it could be if anybody has any ideas on what it is please let me know

I am in a similar situation. I am going to just bite the bullet and tear it apart to see what I am working with. There really is no way to know for sure what you are dealing with until you get inside the motor. Good luck with your project.

Most likely a bent shift fork. It no longer moves the gear enough to engage. It could be about anything though.

There in no knowing until you rip it apart.
