I know you are Yamaha guys but be straight up with me here. I just sold my 06 WR450F and am trying to find the next bike. I swore to myself that I would never ride a two stroke again, but I keep hearing great things about the 300xc. I have also had people tell me to stay away from the xc and since I didn't quite like the weight or power of the WR buy a YZ 450 and set it up for offroad. When I watch the offroad races especially Erzberg, Last man standing, etc all I see are 300XC's partly because of their location but also because they must be great bikes. I ride technical tight trails, hill climbs, some fast desert, no mx. What do you think?

My Dad has a KTM 300. I've rode it enough to know that I won't own one. They are nice bikes, but they have no bottom end like a 4 stroke.

i would go with the 450. There is no replacement for displacement, or torque.

go with the yz450 thats what i did and i only ride tight trails, hillclimbs, and some open stuff. I love the torque of the 450 compared to 2 strokes. Plus the 450 feels very nimble in tight trails.

Interesting post... I have a 2006 YZ450, a 2002 YZ426, and a 2002 YZ250 2 stroke. With that said, I really thought the KTM 300-XCW would be quite the perfect tool in the tight eastern woods (though I haven't ridden one..yet). I really feel that in the tight stuff I can go faster on the YZ250 2 stroke than the 426 or 450, and that 300 should have a little more bottom end oriented powerband than the YZ250, along with a more woods oriented suspension....

I also have an 06 YZ450F and an 05 YZ250. I just sold an 02 YZ250.

Thoughts:

For tighter, more technical terrain, I prefer the YZ250. The 02 actually has a better motor than the 05 for this type of riding. In 03 Yamaha made some slight porting changes and lightened the crank inertia, all of which made it a bit snappier but the the 02 was torquier and easier to ride.
The 250's can be flicked in and out with much less effort.
The 450 has a broader, torquier engine but the handling of the 250 is a much bigger advantage in the tight stuff.

I'm in the process of setting up my 05 for woods. I'm revalving and repsringing the forks and shock, installing a heavy FWW and may try a Gnarly pipe. I've also got an aftermarket seat I'm going to use as the stockers can be quite painful after extended rides. I'll also put on all the other woods goodies (skid plate, bark busters, o-ring chain, etc).

The YZ chassis is a neutral handling platform that instills confidence.

The only 300's I've been on have good motors but vibrate enough for it to be a fatigue concern for a ride of any length of time.

I've got a buddy that only likes to ride 500cc 2-strokes, even in southeastern woods. He rides a KX500 I built for him that is the closest thing to an electric tractor I've ever been on. After riding my 02 YZ250 he said, "That's all you really need. If I ever decide to change bikes I want one of these".

And just so you don't think I'm a Blue Guy, I also have a CR, CRFX, KTM 525SX, Gas Gas 250EC, just sold a CRF450 and I'm looking at a KX450.

I like 'em all.

:)

straight up....why dont you ride both, or similar bikes and decide for yourself? You might have different preferences than others

I ride a _6 yz450 with wr box. Thought the same thing about the 300 xc.

If you are used to yz or wr smoothness and feel the 300 feels rough and shaky. It has lots of power, but for me it felt like I was riding a sled. The new 450 are alomost the same weight and use less fuel which means with a 12l tank I refuel 2 when they have to refuel 3 times on average. In some tight races where passing is dificult this is very good technical advantage

Hello Mcfly? he just sold his 06 450. I think he already knows that he doesn't want a 450.

Now, usually the 300 is compared to the 525, not the 450. Its in a different class. More power, lighter, cheaper.... many things.

When the KTM demo came to AZ I got try all the bikes for 2 saturdays.
Even though my favorite bike was the 250sx, I was really impressed with the 300xc-w (no xc was to be had). Unlike the 250sx, it hooked up like the 450sx:eek: and was way snappier, and lighter and by no means was it weak on the bottom end. It was my first experience on a 300 and for a trail bike it really hauled on the track.

Entonces.... My next bike will be an 08300xc.

Sorry to all you 450 lovers, but the 300 is a pretty bad ace bike:worthy:

I have an '06 YZ 450 and an '05 300 and I can tell you that this will not be an easy choice. The 300 feels lighter by about 7 lbs...I didn't say it was lighter I said it feels lighter.
It's certainly alot easier to work on and I love the "3-stroke" power characteristic. Alot of folks make the mistake of lugging the 300 too much...there's quite a bit of power up top and I love to ring every ounce outta that thing.
The bad thing - for me at least - is the feeling of the front end. I much prefer the way the 450 weights the front end...it really feels planted. The 300can sometimes feel too twitchy for my taste. Certainly my 450 is way faster than the 300 but that's not always a good thing....especially in the woods.
In my opinion, the 300 is a more versatile machine. I'm getting ready to sell my 300 and I'll have to have 2 bikes to replace it. Tight trails, desert races, hare scrambles and some light moto are all good with the 300.

I have an 05 yz 450 and my buddy has an 04 xc300. We are about equal on singletrack with similar bikes, but he eats my lunch on a regular basis on his 300. It is standard for me to ride my guts out, and find him resting under a tree a few miles down the trail. I think I will try the 300 for my next bike, its cheaper to own and operate. I would love to not have to change my oil and filter all of the time. The four stroke is fun because of the low end grunt, but it seems like i spend alot more time doing maintence on it. A newer 450 might be able to keep up a little better, but I really think that ktm has built the perfect bike for offroad.

Well waiting for him to tell us what type off offraod...until then the 300 would be my choice hands down for Eastern woods/SE us trails etc....you can go much faster in the woods with the KTM than the WR/YZF hands down and less maintenence and lighter weight......

Almost all of the fast guys I ride with ride 300's. Takes alot of work to ride the 450 with them. I'm still true blue though.

I just wish that Athena would make a 300cc cylinder and piston for the YZ250. That would be an awsome bike.

I have an '05 300EXC for the tight woods around here. It feels as light and flickable as a 250F in the woods. But, with a LOT more power. The tighter and gnarlier the trail, the more the bike shines. I like the 300 MUCH better than a 450 in the woods. To me in tight technical condition, it feels about 25lbs lighter than a 450.

The 300 has a lot of low end power, but, its different from the low end on a 4-stroke... it will idle down a lot lower than a 4-stroke without "flaming out". Also, unlike a 4-stroke, if you drop the bike, it'll almost always start 1st or 2nd kick. For tight woods riding, the only thing I prefer about the 4-stoke is how easy it is to wheelie over obstacles. 4-strokes hook up a little better.

Even though the 300EXC does amazingly well on the MX track, I prefer the yzf250 and yzf450 for MX.

One more thing I forgot to mention. The ONLY time I notice vibration on the 300 is while warming it up in the pits. Once its groovin in the woods, I don't ever notice vibration... of course my vibration sensors could all be dead from riding CR500s and Husky 430s back in the 80s.
