I had read an earlier post that some of the people with plated dirt bikes (KTM, yamaha wr, honda xr, etc) are getting nasty letters from the state and getting their plates pulled. Is this occuring? I was wondering because I am looking for a new dual sport. I have been leaning toward getting a plated KTM, but do not want to buy one if I could get my plate pulled because someone in Olympia declairs it a off road bike. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know if they will see this thread and speak up but several mentioned having this happen. I believe it happens to those who purchase a bike that was plated by the original owner. It does not seem to happen to everyone. So I am not sure what is the states criteria. I have a plated KX500 that I plated back in 1999 and they have not asked for it's plate. Nor have they asked for the plate on my 525exc. But if someone bought either one of these bikes from me there is no telling what would happen.
I will be ticked if the state ever pulls my KX500 plate cause I spent a lot of money so it would pass the state patrol inspection at the time.

2004 Yamaha WR450F, bought new, Washington resident, still have plate. Just renewed it. Mine wont ever be recalled by the state. I wont mention why, it "just wont". And OMT, you have nothing to fear. The state approved your KX500 when they were still doing it. No way would they revoke that plate. I suspect they will go back to "X" year and try to repop those plates. All except mine!

From a reliable scource who is close to DMV, I understand OR is about to do the same.
This "forced" my wife to let me buy an 07 EXC dual sport.

Oregon is not about to do it they already have been doing it. At least that is what some of our Oregon brothers have been telling us on TT.

It happened to me:foul: I'm still :censored: fumin' that it happened. But it's just like OMT stated. I bought an 04 KTM 450 MXC that was plated by the original owner, and that's when the DOL decided to send me a letter stating that I had to have it inspected. So, I called the state patrol to ask if there was anything I should do before I come in (horn, mirrors, tires, etc.) and the insprctor told me not to waste my money. The first thing he would do would be to run the vin number. Well the MXC came up as MXC/G-racing. I'm thinking that the "racing" is what may have :censored: me.
Anyway, I may be gifting my bike to my old man who lives in Montana, cause I hear it's as simple as filling out a sheet of paper, and outfitting the bike with the appropriate equipment. Then, I'll just borrow it from him during the summer.
Good luck to all.

Did they pull the plate because it is a MXC not a EXC, or are they pull all converted dirt bikes? I would really like a KTM, however I'm not able to afford an $8000 new KTM 450 EXC, and without a plate the bike is not worth much. I already have one without a plate.

There is no way to know for sure. It is inconsistent at this point. I have a friend who just bought an 04 MXC 525 with plate about a year ago. He has not received the dreaded letter yet. As time goes by they will get tighter and tighter on this.
You might try the Suzuki DRZ400S. Good price and I am having a lot of fun on mine. You can shave about 20 lbs off its weight by mods. It feels incredibly light for how much it actually weighs. It does not have the power of the KTMs but is a true dual sport.

The Drz was my second choice. I was thinking pretty seriously about it. Suzuki's seem pretty bullet proof.

It seems VERY inconsistant to me. I have lost my plate:foul: , yet I read about folks in our state having plates put on new bikes, or transferrring old bikes with plates:applause: . It's  frustrating:crazy: to say the least, but I've got one more thing to try before resorting to Montana plates. Again, good luck.

I bought a Ktm 200 exc without a plate about 5 months ago and got it plated at the local grocery store and they sent the title in the mail about 2 and a half months ago....no problems:thumbsup:
So i dont know what they are looking for but somehow I slipped through the cracks.
