Planning to return to the Green Dots this weekend or next. I'm going solo this time and since I've seen how vast the area is I think I will be needing a map. Does anyone know where I can get my hands on one?

The DNR office in E-Burg has them but........the last time I stopped in they were out. Give them a call, if available they might send them to ya. If they do not have maps then some Dept. of Wildlife offices might have them, Yakima and wenatchee would be a good place to start.

Ask for Naneum East/West, Antaneum/LT Murrray, and I think the other is Cowichie.

They were able to send me all the maps except Naneum. Is the missing one critical if I'm starting at Cooke Canyon? The woman at DNR said Fish and Wildlife have not printed any lately and suggested that more requests might prompt them to print more sooner. So here is the info if anyone is interested.

"Perhaps the more requests the sooner they will go to reprint. Their Yakima office phone number is 509-575-2740. The individual manager for the Naneum area for the Dept. of Fish and Wildlife is Pete Lopushinsky at 509-663-6260."

The missing map is the one you need. Pete is the one I talked to and got him to open the gate to the West Bar early this year for one of our rides. They actually flew in with a helicopter to open the gate before we got there. Nice guy. Give him a call. He may have you call the Yakima office though.

Terriffic:confused: Thanks Nick I'm just planning on going to the river from Cooke's Canyon. Can I find my way just by following your directions posted in your ride report? Without the map? Anyone have a used map they are willing to part with?

Do you know, which week your going to be riding? The directions I gave could pretty much get you there. I could see you making a wrong turn in at least one spot. And failing to make one in another. :prof:

I was shooting for this weekend but as the week progresses I can see I won't have time out of work. Now I'm hoping for next week. Are you offering up your excellent guide services again?:worthy: I would hate to put you out again so soon. But if you're up for it I promise not to bring a garage full of coasties with me this time.:ride:

Take a picture of your map Nick and send the file. I can try it too but your camera is better. I think it might work?

Riding from Cooke to the Quilomene would be a nice change. When you rode to Wenatchee Mtn, did you use Naneum Ridge Rd. or the shortcut to the West of Tamarack Springs? Wondering if four corners has snow yet? If not then could ride into the Wenatchee/Jump Off Joe side to make a loop out past the WSU research facility.

Edit: Forgot to mention I am riding Taneum this weekend. Would like to ride with you sometime Thumper.

You can download the free version of Google Earth. There are many layers that can be added onto the 3d maps. Roads is one of them, just hit the check next to "Roads" from the Layers menu. From there you can plot a path and save it to a graphics file and print it.

You can also overlay .gpx tracks.

I imagine the map would be great but it would not differentiate from Green Dot roads and closed roads. The maps we are talking about actually have the Green dot roads in Green color, which makes finding your way around on a dirt bike much easier.

Well lets see if you will be able to make it the week after this. If so I will try to tag along. I hate to see you ride alone in there even though I have done that myself. Maybe we can come up with a map for you before the ride. I can take a picture of mine but printing it out full size might be a task. But then if your good at that kind of thing it may be easy.

Oh, I know your kidding about the coasties cause we loved riding with you folks. We like to joke about the coasties, it's all fun and games.

The 15 minute series "Green Trail" maps are a decent choice too but like Nick says they dont show legal green dotted roads. The fine was over $100 to be on the closed roads. The area takes a few trips to get a feel of the land. It is easy to get confused and turned around or on the wrong road. I guess it depends on your own internal compass? Another problem is that very few roads are marked.

Then again if you go with me, I might pretend to be lost just to bring a bit of adventure to the ride. Wouldn't want things to get boring now would we?

I may be able to print something like that (Actually not me but my Admin. asst. can:thumbsup: ) I'm not really worried about riding out there solo if I can get my hands on a map. I don't push it hard enough to crash very often. Besides if I'm by myself there will be no KTMs to throw rocks at my headlight LOL.

Of course I'm kidding about the"Coasties" I'm thankful have such a great group of young guys that will put up with riding with an Old-N-Slow fart like me. There are actually quite a few more in our club that may show up for a ride at any time.

Can someone post directions to the closest trailhead to the Green dot system off of i-90 coming from Seattle? Place sounds like a good spot to ride :ride: I'm guessing it's more for the dual sport type of bikes but are there any trails or challenging terrain that's fun to play around in. Or is this mostly logging roads?:excuseme: I ride a CR250 meant for trails but my pop's rides a KLR250so I think he might love this place. Thanks:thumbsup:

You must restrict your ridding to the Green Dotted roads. They are watching these roads more and more. Actually have a helicopter that flies over the area. Tickets are very steep if you go off the Green Dots. Also it could lead to the closing of the area if a lot of people start coming in and ignoring the rules. Not saying you would but this is for anyone reading this.

I would bet that your Dad would love this area. Most folks who ride this area love it because of the scenery and there is a challenge to riding long distances and riding loose long rock sections. It becomes a matter of endurance.

Thanks Old Man. I'm a respectable brapper so I wouldn't even think of riding were your not supose to. I've read your report and like the look of riding down to the river. Could someone give me directons to the trailhead off of I-90 coming from Seattle. Also how many miles roundtrip from trailhead to river? I know my bike is not meant for this stuff but if it's reasonable I would love to ride it with my pop's and show him were it is...

It is 63 miles round trip the way we did it. I believe it will be close to 60 no matter, which way you take down to the river. There are Three possible roads down to the West Bar (river). Brewton, Brushy and Tarpiscan.

There are also two other spots on the river that a guy can visit. Right across from the Gorge Concert and Wiskey Dick inlet.

Go through the town of Kittitas until you get to Rd 81. Take 81 till it T's then turn right. Keep traveling until you come to the Cooke Canyon Rd. Turn left on Cooke Canyon Rd.. Follow Cooke Canyon Rd. till it T's and then turn right. Follow it from here into the forest. You will come to a wire gate tied to a tree. Sometimes it closed. If so open it and close it after you pass through. Not too far from there we stage in the area in my ride reports. If you have looked at the reports you will recognize it. The staging area is located 20 or 30 feet to the right immediately after another road on the left intersects the road your on.

That is all from memory but I believe it's pretty accurate. Go to mapquest.com and type in your location and city. Then type in Cooke Canyon Rd. in the City of Ellensburg. It will give you a route to Cooke Canyon.
