I know in Florida you can. The dealer can set it up. I think the KTM titles don't have the "off-road use only" wording that the Jap bikes have (like my WR). A friend of mine was looking at KTM's (200) and the dealer said he could plate it (need to add light kit for turn signals etc.). If looking to buy a new on, ask your dealer if they can do it.

Stranger things have been done. I have seen a street legal CR500. It would be very tough to get away with these days I think.

Yeah Mark has a plate on his 200 too but it is not street legal. I'd like to make my 1974 YZ250 street legal Too! Now that would be BLAST!

You mean street legal or just plate it.?? I know you can plate it (for now) as far as lighting, I'm sure any of that stuff can be added. In WA state law, no turn signlas are required unless it came stock with them, so thats out and there is zilch in this state that sais DOT tires, so knobbies on the road isnt illegal. :ride: And nothing about plastic tanks either. I dont care what plastic tank Larry from Naches sais! Most new cars now all come with plastic tanks.

Anyone have anything new on this? We have a dealer here saying it is possible to license (street legal) a 2008 KTM 300xcw (e) in washington state.

Anyone w/ knowledge of this would be greatly appreciated.

A new never registered anywhere before two stroke will NOT be able to get a street plate. Now, if this bike were registered somewhere else with any kind of title.....

That's what I was thinking w/ the 2t, but they seem to think this is possible at the dealer via a loophole in the law.

If the dealer claims it CAN be done then tell him you will sign papers as soon as you see the tile category G-CYCL and a matching plate on the rear fender.

If he can't do it, walk. Dealers have their ways. I found a way for my two stroke so it's not impossible. You gotta hope that the statement of origin doesn't include the wording for off road use only or closed course competition only. Ask to see the MSO.

Incorrect. New KTM's 2T and 4T never registered can be licensed in Washington for the street if the dealer is willing. I have an 08' 250xcw with a street plate and four of my riding parters have street plates for their 250 & 300xcw's. KTM's enter the US without a designation until the dealer sets it. If you buy a offroad titled bike in Washington and think you can run it through DOT to get a plate that will be next to imposible. I said next to. I haven't heard anyone having success with that in about seven years.

I've seen a brand new 2T KTM 200 with WA plate in the parking lot here at Boeing. Must be possible.

I just picked up my 2008 250XC-F with a plate:p , but it is nowhere near "street legal" now I do have plans to add everthing needed down the rode. So having a plate and street legal 2 different things. Yes you can buy a KTM with a plate, but it may not be Street legal.

Correct. If the bike was ever titled as off-road you cannot re-title it as street licensed UNLESS it is a FACTORY dual sport (all EPA noise and emissions declarations, metal tank, blinkers, DOT tires, kickstand engine shut off, etc.). If KTM has that flexibility where a dealer can declare either way then don't think the dealer has "done" something for you. All they have to do is say either way by selecting the use category in the title application. They must be comfortable doing this because the MSO doesn't prohibit one over the other.

Yes, there's a BIG difference between street licensed (plated) and street legal (equipment). I'm licensed but not legal.:busted: But I don't ride pavement anyway.

(I am not a lawyer)

Legally, if the KTM is sold as a street legal model, then you can plate it. If it is not sold as a street legal model, you cannot. It is fairly obvious which ones are sold as street legal. None of the current SX, XC, or XCW machines are street legal or legally platable in Washington state.

The DOL in Washington has been cracking down on dealers, to the point tha the dealers are feeling the pressure to register the bikes themselves. I went to two KTM dealers when I purchased my bike, and both would rather have lost the sale then let me "skirt the system".

Technically, if you can get the MOF (I might have that term wrong) without the dealer registering it, than you should be able to find a licensing office that will let you get plates for it. As others have mentioned, there is no "off road use only" verbage on this document as there is with Hondas, Suzukis, Yamahas, etc.

Why is it such a big deal to the state? How many bikes in a state fit into this niche market? Maybe 1% of the licensed vehicles? I just don't understand the logic behind not allowing a motor vehicle to be licensed if it meets some physical criteria?

My new KLX450R came with MSO papers that said CYC. So, they plated it. No questions asked. If it had said 'ORV'...it would have been "No Way." All I can figure is that it's a money thing. Some sorta extortion racket our greenie government plays with the OEMs.
