2008 wr450 release June 12 street legal???

Any guess on weather they will make it 50 state street legal like the ktm exc's

In keeping with history wouldn't they have had to make the YZ street legal last year?:thumbsup:

It must suck in America where it's so hard to street legalise a dirt bike. Here in New Zealand Yamaha WRs have been factory street legal (with indicators and everything) since they where released in 1998, that's right even the 400s where (I have a street legal WR426). I don't know what the big drama about getting them legal in America is, they have a battery now (for that weird law saying you have to be able to run your lights for 10 minutes without the engine running) and all the AIS crap, what's the problem? I once read in a magazine that the WRs in NZ and AUS don't come from Japan with all the legal stuff. Instead Yamaha AUS & NZ got the govt approval and the importer adds on all the extra hardware to the bikes.

But yeah it does suck in the most of the US states with getting bikes street legal.

Yes, that is true. I think it comes down to Australia and New Zealand having the same laws country wide, not different laws for each state. It is easy for Yamaha to know what it takes to make the bike road legal here.

Another theory (most likely) is that they wouldn't sell 1 bike here if it wasn't road legal! :thumbsup:

What I am thinking about is why the hell do they release a 2008 bike in the middle of 2007? Is it a '07.5 or something?

I just glanced at an article about the WR being made street legal for '08, but then saw where it read that it will not be available in the US so I moved on. If I remember right, they are calling it a "supermoto" straight away.

I'll look for the article at home and follow up on this nasty little rumor.

If the statement is true about the new 2008 WR's being street legal, that would be the only reason I would sell mine to get a new one.

Michigan is a great state for legalizing bikes. I legalized my 2003 WR450 by adding a hydraulic pressure switch to the rear brake and a helmet mounted mirror (bugeye). The state also requires a horn, DOT tires, and hi-low beam. However, the sheriff who signed me off never even checked for these.

And to top it off, www.bike-line.com provides 12 months of insurance for $49. I like to dual sport, ride gravel roads, and motard on the street too.

Ok, here's the scoop on the WR250s, no mention of the 450s.

From the July 2007 issue of Cycle World Magazine in the "Roundup, Ups & Down" section, page 40.

[COLOR="Red"]"Down: To Yamaha, for holding out on us! Debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show this past spring were the WR250X supermoto streetbike with 17-inch wheels (pictured) and a dual-sport version of the same platform called the WR250R. Although WR in name, these bikes appear mechanically unrelated to the full-on enduros we get stateside. Engines are, however, dohc electric-start Singles with EFI and liquid-cooling. Yamaha USA said there were no plans to import either of the models."[/COLOR]

At first glance the bike looks very much like a black DRZ. I guess we'll know more on June 12th.
