How many 426's are out there? And are parts getting super cheap now that they are up to 7 years old? I have an 01' and despite having an 07 300xcw I want to give the old girl some love and feel that 4 stroke rumble. I really want to put a decomp cam in mine along with checking valves etc, just don't want to invest in a bike that by todays standards is a dinosaur!

I love my 02 426, the 450 DCM made it so easy to start. It has been very reliable for me and handles well even in comparison to more modern bikes. The weight can be imposing some times but I am used to it now. Keep her and do the 450 DCM and check/replace anything in the top end. Maybe think about doing new linkage, swing arm, shock, wheel and steering head bearings while you have it down.

Performance wise, the 426 is still a great bike. For the average guy, they are still very competitive. I rode my old one, an '01, just the other day and it was still a blast. I had forgot how great that motor is. The only issue I see is that as they get older you run more and more risk of suffering expensive failures.

An all around good bike in my book. Still worth it and competive in any B/C class racing + still an all around reliable play bike. You just have to work a little harder to sling it around. :applause:

I can't find a good reason to sell my 426. Someday I'll upgrade to a new 450, but I think the 426 will still be in my garage (with super motard rims on it). :applause:

Yes 642MX - Please keep it as I will still need parts while racing mine in the masters class! Never going to sell mine...

If you can, when you have a bike that you really enjoy, or that meant something special, keep it. I don't mean don't upgrade, I mean buy a new one and keep the old bike. Just that one. And then you won't be sitting there one day wishing, as I do, that you had kept one or two of those old favorites.

"just don't want to invest in a bike that by todays standards is a dinosaur!" Well my dinosaur just placed 2nd in the North Shore Grand Prix this past weekend in the 450 Thumper class. Passed all brands of aluminum framed bikes throughout the afternoon. I agree with Gray,if i only had a couple of my bikes from my younger days...aahhh. Think this 426 will be in my garage for many years to come.

I guess calling it a possible dinosaur is silly since I don't have the skills to really push the bike or ride it like the experts did in 01

You shouldn't have to make much of an "investment" to get one, either. The '03-'05 YZ450 is a lot less expensive these days, too.

As with my guns, they can take my 426 away when they pry my cold, dead fingers from around the grips.
