Just run the vin number online and it'll tell you the year ... Looks like the 03-05 years though, and sharp to boot ... :applause:
I think the tenth digit of the vin # should represent the year, but I'm not positive ...

This is correct, however the digit will be a letter and they don't use a few such as O or any other that could misinterpreted. 2002 was "P" 2003 "R" 2004 "S" 2005 "T" 2006 "V" 2007 "W".

Not since '00 have they used a letter in the VIN to ID the year. Starting with '01, the tenth digit was a 1, and it went on from there.

Model ID's are given with the letter suffix as a year identifier, however, and an '04 would be a YZ450FS.

The bike in the picture appears to be an '04, based on the forks.

That bike is most likely an 03, since it doesn't have Ti footpegs.

Come on, you can't tell that from that picture. Besides, whose to say he didn't swap the Ti pegs when he sold it?

Well, you can see they are black, and that was the first thing I noticed. But other than the suspension and the foot pegs you really can't tell from a distance.

I still think it's an 03 though. lol

You would be able to tell 03 from 04-05 by the frame on the other side. There would be guides for the clutch cable on the newer ones, as Yamaha changed the routing of the cable. On the 03 it went down the frame on the throttle side and behind the carb to another bracket. That is the major way to be able to tell from a picture.

You make a good point, and as I examine the photo, it does appear that there is a clutch cable running down past the right of the carb as it does on the '03. Marko may be right after all, but I have seen the older clutch cable set up on a very early '04. The forks still look like the 48mm '04's though. The VIN is still the best way to tell.

I remember watching a SM race that had the main held under the lights, and the track was laid out in the infield of about a half mile paved oval. The dirt section dumped out onto the middle of turn 3 of the oval, and the fast guys would drag the pegs all the way through turn 4 in a shower of sparks. The "color commentator" made a remark about this. "Ward is using steel pegs, and Doug Henry has titanium, and that's why Ward's sparks are orange, and Doug's are white."

Very cool at night.

its hard to see the sparks from my titanium pegs....but whats strange is i have titanium boot sliders and its easy to see the "orange" sparks of them. guess my sliders are a cheaper grade of titanium

It's an '03. But if the forks are 47mm, they are not a Yamaha fork. '03's are 46mm, '04 and later are 48mm.

after more accurate measurements of the forks, I can say are 48

but as you can see the triple clamps are different between each other (upper and lower)...is it normal? :applause:
