Fork Oil Height setting

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, im 250 pounds and just installed some new .50 ( i think or .49) front springs and I have some 7 weight fork oil, I have the springs out, forks compressed and all bled, what is a good starting point for me to set the oil level at? I called Mx-tech and they said they would return my call with the info and they never did, what do you guys suggest??

As a heavier rider, I have always used the top of the range - (highest oil level) - recommended in the manual but I typically run 5wt.

I'm about 265 and I use .50 fork springs, but I'm using Mobil1 Syn ATF, which is supposed to be about 15 wt. I set the height at 120 mm and I think it's good because you get the plushness of the lower oil height balanced with the stiffer springs (and in my case, the heavier oil). If you need additional bottoming resistance, just add a bit more oil. Always easier than trying to remove a little bit.

The stock setting is 132mm, but you can put more oil in at 5mm increments using a syringe throught the air bleed screw at the top of the fork tube if you want it harder. I weight the same as you and run .5okg/mm springs and they work 100%. Make sure you put a 6.0kg/mm spring in the rear shock to balance out your suspension. You will not be sorry.

Setting the springs up to your weight is the first thing you should do, before playing around with oil heights, clicker settings etc. Riding off road there are so many differant types of terrain you probably wont even feel the differance if a rebound or a compression setting is out by a click, but you will feel the bike bottoming out on a jump or diving on you when braking because the springs are the wrong size.

Good luck

i run my forks 5" down from the top outer leg, with them compressed. (i'm not a fan of the metric system). i run the same springs as u...works good on basic trails...but a little soft for jumping, would want more oil for that...my suspension shop said to run 5w fork oil in them, so thats what i'm running. deffinitly better than stock...just wonder what new valving would do...hhhmmm...maby next year.

Thanks guys, i decided to go with the stock setting of 130mm and 7weight oil and set the clickers at 10 and 11 (stock) for now and will see how I like it. It has to be better then stock, i was bottoming out just going up some hills let alone jumping any more then 6" in the air, lol. i can always just remove the upper caps and add a little more if i have to at a later date if i choose, thanks again guys.
