2007 WR450F Fuel Economy

Recommended Posts

I agree totally if you short shift the bike. I ride my '07 like a two stroke thats why I only get around 50 miles on a tank. My mate short shifts all the time and he gets +- 60 miles on a tank when we go on an out ride. I was tired of running out of gas (and waiting for him to catch up) so I installed an IMS 12L tank and all my problems are solved.

I did some jetting work or at least paid someone else to put a JD Kit through. He would tell me the final settings which means I'll have to strip it down again. Getting better economy now. I have also canhged the tip of the exhaust for better flow. Can't afford an aftermarket exhaust so this mod will have to do.

I still need to buy a tank.

For those of you that are running the IMS tanks...

Did you all buy new petcoks and if so which type? Did you buy new screw on caps and breather hoses?

Thanks in advance,

Mark H

why is that a dyna jet kit only has jets from 134 to 160 . I have one of these kits I have the 160 in right now .I'm not sure if it is right I have not rode it yet.I'm thinking it is too small . I have a fmf pipe too . I think it is weird that the biggest jet in the kit is a 160 and the stock jet was a 162

I first used stock petcock mounted inside out with stock hose, this works fine but is a pain to actuate. Any petcock from a steel framed era WR/YZ F will have the line connection on the right side just figure out if you want reserve or not. You'll also need the YZ shrouds with your IMS.

IMS comes with a cap, you'll need a vent hose though.

Word is CLARKE is going to have a WR specific tank in the next few months:excuseme:

Any idea whether it might be a little larger than 3.2 gallons? I just tried calling them, but had to leave a message. I'm looking for something closer to 3.5 gallons, like the Acerbis tank (it's a large 3.3) for my '03 WR250F. Seems like they're having a hard time fitting larger tanks to all these aluminum-framed bikes.

I just finished a 39 mile GP and @ 35 mi I had to flip over to reserve. My buddy with the same bike never had to. We both have totally different riding styles and it makes a huge difference. I am now in search of a bigger, but not huge tank. The search goes on

When I race I turn the petcock to reserve at the start of the race, then you will never need to stop to hit reserve....:ride:

Be careful pulling from reserve unless necessary..... stuff tends to collect in the bottom of the tank over time and that's not good...trust me I owned a Jet-Ski rental biz for 10 years.?

Have to say guys that my fuel is really. good, about as good as my 03, once you get a good jet set up, it all runs really good... the UK WR's are so so so so so rich... but once jetted all is ok... running a 134 main Jet 3/4 turn on Fuel Screw..can't remember what the Needle was set to... I used the Dynojet kit.. and the bike spent a few hours on the Dyno finding a good setting and my setting rocks, really really good power delivery and great drive... we worked more on Drive then top end....

I thought jet sizes were the same between JD and Dyno only design differences.

There is NO way a 134 jd jet with 3/4 turn screw will work on this bike anywhere in the world unless you go 18000 feet or higher. Not sure anywhere to ride that high and if it works with the air.

My 400 CC drz with an FCR ran with 155 and I am in Utah at 5,000 feet.

Something is certainly different with the dynojet...

Yeah fuel range on my stock 07' tank sucks compared to my 04', 01' & 99' :busted:

I was running 3rd last weekend in a hare scrambles, probably about 40 miles in and I run out of gas, get passed by 4th place while switching to reserve and passed by 5th place while in the pits re-fueling ?

Time for an aftermarket tank but still waiting for one that does not require YZ shrouds ?

Have you found one yet?

........... bahhh :ride:

The 134 main jet is very possible.......... just depends on what needle your using. THe main and needle always go together as a combination, he said he was using a dynojet needle ........... it probably has a very thin tip on the end with a less retrictive flow out of the nozzel , hense the need for a smaller main.

i have been raising the float height by 1mm to get less fuel loss out the vent tubes and using a 9mm pin on the accel pump diaphram( std is 8) thus reducing the squirt time, this together with a bit of commen sense ( in regards to throttle hand control) and you can expect around 100km per tank.

I have done a few rides and have realised that my standard setup 07 WR450F has poor fuel economy compared to my 02 WR250F. I know the bikes are chalk and cheese so that I would post a thread and see how others are going.

I haven't done any mods to filter box, exhaust, jetting etc. The bike is completely stock.

I generally do rides which include a large amount of up and down hill forest trails which vary from open to tight single trail. The most recent ride was at Mt Mee which is quiet steep and rough in places. I led the ride so rode relatively smoothly and didn't have extreme dust to contend with and racing other riders.

My fuel consumption was a full tank for 68kms of riding. I was hoping for 85 - 90kms at the worst.

So, anybody had any similar experiences or got any suggestions. I have just finished reading the 2007 WR450F mods Sticky and got a lot of useful info for future plans. All the motivation for mods related to speed/torque etc and not fuel economy.

Afterall, you can only ride as far as your fuel range. And, everybody talks about cutting down weight so if range can be increased without fitting an aftermarket fuel tank and increasing weight then we can all ride further and faster.

I am getting exactly the same milage or should I say "kilometerage" as you with my 07 WR450 and mine is all uncorked ,I ride hard but in trails and single track. (that is less load than wide open desert riding) I am jetted a tad rich and I am planning on cutting back a bit. for example: my pilot screw has almost no affect because the pilot jet is a size too rich. When I do my changes I will re-post my results.

Where did you buy it? The TT store catalog only goes to 06'. What color did you go with? Got any pics? I would love to see some.

........... bahhh ?

Bought it thru my sponsor, the 06' YZ tank is the one you want, I got clear primarily for racing because I want to easily see my fuel level when glancing down before passing or entering the pits.
