I'm going to be replacing my front wheel bearings on my yz 450. Is a wheel bearing puller really needed?

Not usually. Most of the time, you can get the bearing spacer (between the two bearings) to move over just enough to get a pin punch in behind the edge of one and drive it out. The second one is easy.
