New owner 650L - Exhaust recommendations

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Just bought a 2000 XR650L and want to open it up. It has already been rejetted and had the air box modifications and now I want to replace the stock exhaust. Of course I'm looking for more performance and something that actually sounds like a motorcycle instead of a moped. I used to have SuperTrapps on my old race jeep and White Brothers on my old Harley and were happy with both for those applications. What would you suggest for this bike? I have no idea where to start or what works best. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

White Brothers E2 is the way to go, Im realy impressed with mine, big power increase and great note!

I've got an older Big Gun complete system on my 02 but think it's a bit on the loud side. I've had a few recommend the White Bros. E2 and say it's a fairly quiet system. Thoughts?

Are you replacing the entire system? If you are check out the XRs only full system if you want the best. Supper trapp is good if your just going with a new can. Beware of the rivited cans.

+1 on this response. The xrs only is the best designed and high quality components and at 100db plenty loud, you can add a quiet core insert for96db. Be sure to check it out at www.xrsonly.com make sure you go with an all stainless steel system regardless of brand.

Thanks for all of the great feedback! I ended up going with the SuperTrapp mostly due to cost - found it on eBay for a lot less than suggested retail. The XRs Only looked really good but was too pricey for me at this time. I'll keep checking eBay and maybe a good deal will come up on one. Thanks again for all of the comments and suggestions!

I need a new pipe for rust issues. I'm more concerned about price and noise. I don't want to be much louder. I'll watch ebay for good deals.

Is it possible to go quieter and more power?

Quieter than stock?

Probably not, unless you put a car muffler on there.

  • 5 years later...

Rather than start a new thread thought I would resurrect an old one on the subject of exhausts. I have a brand spanking new 2012 XR650L (also still have the old one but that is being sold).

I purchased a Big Gun exhaust and was happy with the power increase but it became a pain in the arris having to repack it and, basically, its just too loud. I still have the exhaust and was wondering if it is possible to use the Big Gun headers but keep the stock silencer (or muffler as you call them...) Reason for doing this is that the standard headers look like crap after a period of use and the stainless steel ones always look nice.

I will be modifying the silencer to open it out a bit.

Your expert views please.

I have the FMF Q and i think it is fairly loud. It was quiet as hell when i first installed it then after around 1,500mi it started to get loud so i replcaed the packing with some of the shelf brand and didn't really bring it back to what it was. So how often are you guys having to repack your your mufflers? Has anybody heard both the super trapp isd2 and the fmf q, which one would be quieter without the super trapp being choked up?
