Got a 2002 YZ426 on Saturday. Took it out riding, and it was a blast! Had bought a new one on Christmas eve, 2001, and it the starting drill sucked. This one is a whole lot better. Despite being a little bit of a handfull in tight technical stuff, I had a ball.
Am going to do a side by side comparison with my 2002 YZ250 next weekend. The starting on the bike has really been pretty good, kinda surprised. Maybe 4-strokes aren't as bad as I thought...

If jetted properly, the 426 starts really easy!!! If it doesn't, somthings wrong!!! This is a bad misconception about this bike...

After my first one, I thought there was no worse bike out there. Past, present, or future, but this one is actually fun.

Kicked it one time this morning, and it fired right up. Still has the stock cam, and uses the compression release. Did the blue wire mod to it this morning, and it fired first kick, with tennis shoes on. Was used to my old one that I kicked so much it split my boot soles open.

man that must suck kicking a bike that won't start up 1st-2nd kick hot or cold. my bike starts 1st-2nd kick hot or cold and i love it so im not familiar with those who have to kick it like 20-30 times to get a little bark or noise to come out of the exhaust. sweet bike man and congrats.

Just get the jetting and float level set for your location and spend a day sorting out the suspension with the clickers/oil level and that bike will be a pleasure to own and ride. I love my 02.

Exactly... I have never had ANY problems starting either my 01' WR or my 00' YZ.

When i first bought mine i was the guy kicking it till exhaustion for that little sputter in the exhaust. The previous owner told me to blip the gas 3 times on a cold start. I finally puta new plug in it and it fires in 2-3 kicks everytime now w/o blipping the throttle. Just need new fork seals and i'll be loving this bike even more! [01 426]

that's what i did when i couldn't start my bike! i had a habit of slightly twisting the throttle while kicking because my previous bike is a rm 125. lesson learned: NEVER touch the throttle while the bike is off

The "twist while you kick" thing that so many two stroke guys do (for some reason I've never figured out) is a very bad habit, and is sure way to get the bike NOT to start. But 1-3 priming twists on a dead cold engine is a different thing altogether, and most YZF's will need it.

Agreed... and with my WR426 twisting while you kick, while you sit, etc.. etc.. was a sure way to foul the plug! :applause:

My 02 has been a great starter from the beginning, the 450DCM made things so easy. As long as you keep your hand off the throttle (I rest mine on the brake resevoir) the YZ426F should fire off easily. The time spent getting the jetting crisp is time well spent.

Most of the starting problems and techniques have been refined over the years and since we are referring to a bike that is at least 4 years old (426). Your bike is dialed in now. Sure seems to be a lot of threads on starting issues for it not to have been real.

I bought a yz400f recently (my first 4 stroke bike) and can't start it.
How could I know if the problem is due by the starting technique or by improper adjustment of the carb?

Well, here's the correct technique:

Maybe that will help you figure it out.

Thanks Gray for your advices and your time!
The video helped me identify one thing I did incorrectly, I just hope it will solve the problem. Thanks again!
