Shifting problems on my 06 450f (Index Lever)

Recommended Posts

I've never had a problem like this. Some people who have had issues with their trans. start using a synthetic or semi-synthetic trans fluid. You might also want to take a look at your shift lever and make sure it's not hitting the ignition cover somewere.

Try "dry" shifting it on the stand with the engine off to see if it feels hard to shift to 4-5. You'll have to rock the wheel some.

If it has a problem still, it's possible that there is something causing the shift cam to be hard to rotate through that position, such as a bent fork, unusual wear in the cam grooves, or a gear that for some reason does not slide freely on its shaft. Also, if the problem worsens with RPM, you could have an abnormally early failure of a transmission bearing, possibly the left mainshaft bearing.

Is this something that it's done as long as you've had it, or something that has recently developed?

I saw a guy at the track yesterday on an 07 that couldn't get his bike into neutral. His bike almost knocked him out. Not sure if he siezed (hard to believe) or had some other tranny problem, but I watched him for 10 minutes (and his partner) try to get this thing into neutral and the back wheel was just locked up. Never found out if they got it resolved or not.

My bike hits nuetral from 1st to 2nd frequently, especially when winding it hard. Very annouying little isse I have over the recent weeks. We'll have to see how it goes.

kawasaki owner here - but just pulled apart my friends 06 yz450 and the shift drum stop (arm with wheel at the end) now has a bearing instead of a wheel. Looks like a change in 06 to improve shift feel.

Well anyhow the balls came out of the bearing and left the inner and outer race, and the bike would not stay in gear on a heavy load since the shift drum was not being held in place but only slightly at the detent.

I pulled it apart and I was able to get the small (1mm) balls out of the case with a magnet fishing around the sump. I am going to replace the arm this morning and see if I can retro-fit the 05 stop with the wheel and not bearing, and spring to the 06.

I came here hoping I would see a lot of people with this problem and a retrofit ok, or a bulletin and upgraded part from yamaha. I'll post my findings later this week.

In the mean time I suggest anyone having this problem of jumping out of gear or sloppy shifting, and a bike at 100 + hours, to look at the shift drum stop and see if the bearing has come apart.

If it is not oil it is premature wear - shift fork probably. I would swirtch oil brand and see if this helps. I use Amsoil 4stroke oil - it helps the shifting on my 06 a lot
I switched to amsoil about a month ago I used to run yamalube in the 06 but after switching to amsoil MCF 10w40 it shifts better now than it use to. I herd everone say if I used amsoil it would shift smoother,I thought to myself it couldnt be that much of an improvement but after I did I couldnt believe how much better it shifts......Like now when the bike is in neutral and you shift down in to first it hardly makes that clanking sound now,use to with yamalube when you done that sounded real loud a rough. I highly reccomend useing it:thumbsup:

Apologies for the brief interruption again but reporting back on the shift drum stop replacement - the new stop fixed the problem jumping out of gear entirely, it was an 11.00 part was all.

The new part does not look very durable either, the bearing is loose even when brand new. If the bearing comes apart again I will try to fit the older 05 style which is just a solid wheel instead of the bearing. It appears like the spring, stop arm, and bolt all need to be replaced to fit the older one though since the arm is a different shape where the spring attaches.

Thanks all. Sry again for the interruption (Now back to your regularly scheduled programming... ? )

ttt for this one, i am having an issue with the bike dropping back a gear while under load. sometimes it does it, some times it works fine. i was told to check the detent spring. and was also told you can access this by pulling the right side case cover. can the shift drum stop talked about above be accessed without splitting the cases?

this bike is used primarily for supermoto track days and i have raced 3 times. the motor has about 30 hours on it. started with yamalube, switched to golden spectro semi syn, and the last two changes have been with mobil 1 full syn bike specific 10-40. change the oil and filter every other to every third ride. after and before and after every race day. so the failure isnt for lack of oil changes or good oil.

this past weekend after putting the bike into 1st and running the dirt section the bike did not want to come out of first after getting back on the pavement. after a couple, throttle ups and downs it went into the higher gears. no clunking or rattling, asked a friend with an 07 to go ride it see what he thought, turned a few laps said it shifts fine and held all gears.

scared it's gonna come apart at high speed and hurt me or another rider around me for my failure. any help appreciated. ski

07 is 2S2-18140-10-00

updated maybe? the detent spring is the same number. the star wheel on the shifter side is the same number for both years as well. i hope this is it, otherwise i am scratching my head and splittin the cases. ski
