Want to change the fork oil

Recommended Posts

Make sure you remove the rubber plug at the bottom of each fork. Using a 14mm allen wrench (you can get a three socket set at an auto parts store for about $10 that has a 14mm in it). Using the 14mm allen wrench socket and an inpact wrench you can spin the compression assembly out of the bottom of each fork and all the fluid will come rushing out. If they don't spin free then you will have to have the other fork tool. Read the right way to do this here:

It will show you how to make the tools also.

Take the top off and remove the spring i wouldnt go through the bottom no need to do all that the link shows taking the top off then spring that should show you after that you just have to take some time gettin fluid out put in the sun to help heat the oil a bit and turn upside down and pump and pump it takes a bit but when u get almost all out you can use a little solvent to break up the rest once youve gotten it clean you can put new fluid in check manual or call your local shop and get stock amount of oil when u start puttin in you have to pump some you will feel the resistance thru the whole up and down motion and then you know you have oil down If you measure exact amount its pretty hard to put to much in but if you do its easy to remove a bit when you set your final oil height When all done slide down your dust seals and lube your fork seals with a lithium grease it tells you to do this in your manual you should have no probs its easy just take ur time and get all the old oil out

Dont forget to remove the forks from the triple clamp to do it this way, its a lot easier than trying to turn the whole bike upside down:applause:

MY bad i guess i ASSUMED someone was smart enough to take the forks off the bike LMAO and what i was saying to begin with was to check final oil height by whatever the manual says is correct height but measuring is a good starting point to put new oil in. cmon now read the words

AND who said anything about mixing solvents with new fluid in the forks??? NOT ME i said use some to get the forks clean from old oil read a bit closer and dont confuse yourself or the guy wanting the help.

Too many hot heads on here instead of people giving their opinions and help

No hot head, I biuld suspensions and your opinion on using solvent to clean out for rest of the trapped fluid is not a good idea and will trap solvent in the fork. This will leave solvent to mix with the new fork fluid. Once you have taken the forks all the way apart it become apparent why you can not get all the fluid out of the forks without taking them apart properly. I am not giving an opinion but, facts from biulding suspensions for guys that race distric 37, Score and BITD races. When the fork is upside down fluid gets trapped between the rebound tube and the lower fork tube with noway to come out.

You can see some pictures on one of my site page here, maybe you can get a better picture of what is going on. If you donot mind mixing new fluid with old fluid or old fluid with some solvent in it, who am I to try to save someone from doing the same?:bonk: No hot head, just trying to stop someone from doing the job half way right......... This is said, with 'ASSUMing someone had took the forks off the bike and turned them upside down, pumped them, shook them, spun them over their head, or what ever else they could think up to get this left over amount of trapped fluid out of the fork.' The XL650L and XR650R have totaly different forks.
