My Suspicions exactly...... Read on

KTM factory rider Isidre Esteve Pujol of Spain underwent surgery on Friday in Barcelona, Spain to stabilize a spinal injury sustained during a high speed crash last weekend.

The Spanish rider was injured while competing in the Spanish All Terrain Rally.

Specialists Dr. Villanova and Dr. Meir have reported after the operation that the level of injury to the 7th and 8th vertebrae was such that the rider has suffered paralysis from the waist down. They must now wait for inflammation to subside from the spinal column to establish if any further treatment is at all possible. The situation must be considered serious and it is too early to tell if certain experimental treatments for spinal injuries being conducted in the USA and Canada will be able to help the injured rider. Esteve was wearing a neck brake, which is effective against neck injuries and a strong back protector but tragically, because of the nature of the crash, neither protective device was able to prevent this particular type of spinal injury.

KTM's Motor Sports Consultant and former motocross world champion Heinz Kinigadner visited Esteve in hospital shortly after the accident and said that considering the serious situation, the rider was in relatively good spirits. He is able to speak, breathe and eat independently and was able to explain exactly how the accident happened.

"Esteve was riding a 525 racing machine, not a rally bike," Kinigadner said. "He was traveling through a dry river bed at quite high speed when he hit a large rock. He was able to lift the front wheel but then lost control and shot over the handlebars."

"Esteve never lost consciousness," Kinigadner reported. "He thinks that that bike may have fallen on top of him but he is not sure. But he was aware from the moment of impact that the injury was a serious one." Both KTM and sponsor Galoisses are standing by to offer Esteve whatever support is possible, Kinigadner said.

How do you know the brace didn't stop him from further injury? Possibly a higher injury, maybe he would be a quad and not a parapelegic if it weren't for the brace??

Even if this is the Leatt brace, no peice of safety equipment eleminates the risk of you hurting yourself.

You're basically claiming if you jump from a skyscraper the Leatt brace should save you from any injury to the head/neck.

I'm sorry, but I'm really feeling feisty tonight.

I hope you're not trying to say the Leatt brace should protect a person from all injury or it's not a credible product. C'mon, let's be frickin' realistic. As Two said, the rider may have ended up a quadriplegic rather the paraplegic, had he not been wearing a neck brace. And of course, the presence of a neck brace may have had absolutely no influence at all on the outcome in this particular accident.

If the Leatt brace could offer 100% protection from all injury, it would be worth gazillions of dollars and most of the world would happily pay it.

Pujol broke his back at T7 and T8 in the Thoracic spine. The Thoracic spine is down in the middle of your back.

The Leatt brace is designed to protect your Cervical spine, in other words, your neck. It can't prevent injuries to the middle and lower spine, but it can prevent a broken neck.

k you're dumb. he thinks his bike might have fallen on top of him. so the bike lands on his spine.... how the hell would a neck brace protect your lower and mid spine?

It is a known fact that one of the main supporters of the Leatt neckbrace is the Ktm Factory team. They have done all the research and testing on the product. Unfortunatly one of their riders has broken his neck in a crash. On a second note, I try to use every piece of equipment out there to help offset my odds of have a serious injury like this one. The reason I have posted this is to make a point for those who believe that wearing a Leatt brace will help you in a crash. Let me tell youy my friends, if you are going to break your neck in a crash a neckbrace will not help. I would like to point out the NFL. The NFL has a lot more money in research and testing than Leatt and I don't see many players wearing a brace. There are some who wear one but many don't. I don't think that people should just not wear anything and hope for the best nor am I saying that "everything is in god's hand's". Please do your homework before you go out and buy something that has been marketed well. Untill I can see staunch results pointing out the fact that Leatt will help you more than neck roll, I will save my money. Now let's go ride.

Where is the research data? Please prove to me that the Leatt is better than a neck roll. And please don't send me to their website. I'm NOT being confrontational, I would just like some data to back up all this talk!!!!!

How dare you say anything negative about the Leatt... If you can afford to buy a 900 dollar exhuast system, a 500 hundred dollar helmet, 300 dollar knee braces, or a 7900 dollar motorcycle..... surely you can afford to purchase a Leatt PAL....:bonk: :p :p

What is the cost of your safety worth???? what is the cost of diapers for the rest of your life versus the cost of this exquisite piece of safety equipment???

Now how much would you pay for this brace?? but wait, there's more....oh, never mind...:bonk: :naughty: :D

Im really getting tired of these leatt threads that dont need to exist. Right now, it seems eveyone has thier own opinions on the brace and are pretty convicted and arent going to sway either way. So do us all a favor, and lay off the Leatt brace for a while. If you want to bash it and hate it, all you are doing is giving Leatt more publicity than it already has...
