FMF Power Bomb Header what do you think

Recommended Posts

I have a 2001 650R with a Edelbrock and I have the Q2 slip on and I am thinking about adding the FMF power Bomb SS header will it fit? ( I am only asumming yes) and should I do it?

your thoughts guys

I have one right now and honestly didn't notice much of a difference between the uncorked stock pipe and then the FMF Powerbomb and Q2 Muffler. So, if your doing it for the coolness factor then I would say go for it! If it's for the performance factor then I think you will be a little disapointed.

should I get the Hi Flo instead?

The Q2 has a plug in the end that reduces the sound. Get a powercore end cap and you will gain some power.

I would have to agree with Billajack on his point. A slightly corked up silent muffler might hold back some of the benefit you can get from a header to some degree. A free'er flowing header should give you a noticable difference in power from around 4500rpm on up. That is where the additional oompf is usually really noticed. At least in combination with a good flowing muffler. If you ride mostly in more closed up terrain, you may not really need or want a header. Unless you want it for the stainless factor or bling. If you want to possibly keep a little more bottom-midrange with maybe a little less top end effect, you might want to go with the FMF Hi-Flo.

Another thing to note with an Edelbrock carb - The Power bomb module will butt up against the accelerator pump screw. You either have to slightly tilt the Edelbrock or put a little dent in the 'Bomb' to allow some clearance. I personally don't like the idea of tilting the carb even if it's not that drastic. I like the floats to be free, straight up and down. I would rather put the dent in the module if I chose the Powerbomb.

I actually chose and use the HI-Flo for & with my Edelbrock myself for prefering not to mess with the powerbomb setup with it.

I had also noticed that some Powerbomb headers were being made with a flattened spot in the front pipe where it crosses in front of the bike's frame downtube. This might be only on older versions though, as I have seen some newer ones that didn't have this done to the front wrap around pipe. It looks like it was done to provide clearance,(or more clearance) from the frame and be 'old spec'. I have never seen a Hi-Flo version that had that. I have seen four or five Hi-flos and their front wrap around pipe had it's fully rounded diameter. If you want a Powerbomb, just make sure the one you are ordering has the full rounded diameter front pipe, just to be sure.

well do you recommed the Hi Flo ?

Either the powerbomb or the hi-flo is a good combo with the FMF pipe. I'm running a PowerBomb and a PowerCore4 FMF combo and it works pretty well. The Q2 pipe is exactly the same as the Powercore4 but has a different endcap/plug. This makes it easy to try both the quiet and loud versions of the muffler for fairly cheap.

I think I read that the powerbomb is supposed to be a bit better on the low end with the bomb section for pulse tuning while the hi-flo is a bit better on the top end of the rev range.

Just make sure you don't melt your pants on the bomb section. You may want to wrap the bomb section with header wrap or find a guard similar to the stock pipe.

Keep in mind tht you have to remove the radiators to install a header. You also need new crush washers for the exhaust gaskets.

I guess I would have to say I do just for the fact that it combines with the Edelbrock with no issues whatsoever. Granted, some guys will think nothing of having to work around the powerbomb but I just prefered otherwise.

For reference of power character of the HI-Flo, It has given my bike a good extra rush of power from midrange on up. From approx. 4500rpm on up is where it is noticed and really comes on at that point. The bottom end is still plenty strong but a little 'softer' you might say. Explanation: The stock header gives sort of a hit or spike of power right off the bottom at around 2500rpm?, but then signs off early in the upper midrange. With my experience with the Hi-Flo you lose that more abrupt hit right off the bottom but the low end is still strong for the most part. I think you might notice that from most any larger header compared to the stock header. This is the only way I can really explain it. You may not really lose much bottom end power overall, again, it just will not have that abrupt spike of power right off the bottom, if that makes sense.

I use the Hi-Flo with a White Bros Pro Meg muffler so you might have a somewhat different power character with your muffler.

If you really like the idea of the Powerbomb, go for it. It is a great header also. You just have to work around it as mentioned earlier.

If you PM me, I can send you pics of the differences of fitment and clearence of the two headers in relation to the Edelbrocks pump screw for a reference. I will be back later today or this evening.

A little off topic but.....

I have a 2000 XR650R uncorked witht he stock exhaust drilled. I them bought a XR's Only Competition SS Exuast pipe with the full disc system and then bought a near new stock exhaust uncorked and all original. I drilled 4 small holes in the pipe around the insert which you would drill out normally for the uncorked mod.

These are my findings:

the complete uncorked mod was very very loud and sounded tinney and LOUD

the XR's Only competiion mod was a little less loud but had a cool throaty sound that sounded like some serious power

the drilled exhaust with 4 holes drilled around the stock insert *see the XR400 mod* and the power was very near the uncorked or XR's Only Competiion exhaust but seriously a hell of a lot quieter.

Going to keep this exhaust on, the drilled 3 holes mod, as it still developes power with the uncorked jetting but is a lot quieter than uncorked or aftermarket exhaust
