can I swap all components to a newer frame?

Recommended Posts

not lame i was thinking the same thing at one time and i think it was in dirtrider in one of there reader questions sections somebody was wanting to swap there parts over to an aluminum frame, they said it could be done but would be better off to sale it and buy an 05 or newer, nothing wrong with a 2003,those are also great bikes.

We have talked about this before. A search should provide some god info.

As I remember it, the only part we were concerned with was the triple clamp...specifically the bottom one. Apparently the stops changed location when they went from steel to aluminum.

Since you have a 2003 yz250, you'll need the newer 48mm forks, the 03s and older came with 46mm forks.

For the frame swap, besides the bottom triple clamp and forks, you also need a newer ignition with the built in grounds, since the grounds for the steel frame will not work with the aluminum frame.

just to add on. I think all you need ignitionwise is an 05 coil? mxa had somthing about that mod a while ago.

Sorry for the ignorance on this but in my search I didnt find what I was looking for. Are the YZ250 and YZ125 frames interchangable? Or are the mounts different? Also are the YZF frames useable or is ther alot more involved in the swap than if I were just going to a newer YZ250 frame?

yeah i wouldnt bother trying to swap to a different bike frame. if anything go with newer yz 250 frame. And I just remembered you also have to trim down the gas tank rubber gromets as the aluminum frame is wider.

In all actuality theres really not a hole lot you would need to do for that frame swap.

You can get the harness on ebay for $20-$40 bucks.

Bottom triple clamp or complete from $40-$100 bucks

Everything else will fit except maybe the gas tank, but someone had already mentioned it would work with the rubber garment trimmed down & I would think it would fit being from 02 to 08 the plastics are all the same & same mounting holes except the number plate is a tad bit different but easy to make work (04 down triple clamp). As far as your suspension goes, you will get the money you need to purchase new forks if you sell the ones off your 03, just remember 48mm. Everything from what I have seen & done will work out fine.. Unless there is something im missing, it will all bolt directly up.

Ok, since I did this I'll let you know what you need.

First, you will need a 2005+ linkage and the bolt that goes through the frame to hold it. Your 2003 bolt is too big and the wishbone on the linkage is not wide enough.

Next, you will need to buy the coil ground for the new bikes. Its just a metal bracket not expensive. A new rubber sleeve for the CDI.

You can use your 2003 clamps. If you use a newer year your 2003 forks won't work. You will have to upgrade your forks. The 2003 stops rub on the frame. So you will need to file them down about 1/4" so it clears.

The lower exhaust bracket on the frame requires a spacer so that the exhaust will line up straight. I used 2 nuts.

I did not have an issue with the rubber tank absorbers.

Lastly, the upper shock bolt has changed to the half moon style on the frame so you need this new bolt. The frame has a stopper so the 2003 bolt doesn't work.

Wow thats alot of different pieces together, mind explaining which ones you used from which year? I might be able to find deals on different parts.

Yeah, there is quite a bit of mixed parts with it ? My frame is an 04 though..

05 YZ250F forks

03 YZ250f rear shock

03 YZ250F swingarm & linkage

06 YZ 250 motor

07 YZ 250 side panels (number plates)

07 YZ 250 front number plate

05 YZ 250 seat

04 YZ 250 cdi & harness

04 or 05 YZ 250 carb

I know there is a couple others, but I just cant think of it right now.

I had another 04 then bought an 05 & switched the entire suspension & swingarm from the 04 to the 05. Only reason why I did that was because the 04 had the suspension done up from works when I had bought it.
