YZ 1/4 turn race throttle mod

Have you checked that the idle speed doesn't rise when the bars are turned from lock to lock?

I feel that a little play is probably advisable if possible in view of the fact that every bike I have ever owned (50 plus i think) has always had throttle free-play specified in the Owners Manual. I guess it would allow for any binding/stretching of the cable that might make the throttle come on a bit.

Maybe your tubing is a little thick?

I think while my bike is apart and we have snow on the ground I am all for this one. I hate trying for wot and not having the range in my wrist to do it without feeling maxed out. Just sold my CR500 last fall and bought a 03 yz450f so I am new to the four strokers. Not too scared of a faster hit the 500's power was on a light switch all on or all off in a 1/4 - 1/2 a turn and wot was scary on a good day. I like the sound and look of this one great post.

No Binding....cable is simple to short (not the length of the cable itself but the amount of exposed cable after all the adjustments have been shortened).

I had it out on the track yesterday and loved the mod:thumbsup: No issues but agree some free play would be nice. I think I may be able to take the lock nut of the carb side of the cable and replace it i with a thinner one. This may give me the little extra cable lenght I need. If not i may remove that lock nut all together, tighten it all the way at the carb, and adjust any extra on the cable adjustment.

Any chance we could get the images re-posted on this thread?? Would love to try this on my 450 for desert racing/sand washes. Found myself trying to regrip and get in funky positions to hit WOT during a race last weekend. Quick search and I found this sweet mod!

Just buy the aluminum 1/4 turn throttle for 50 bucks. If I raced I wouldn't want too many PVC mods on my bike.

Good point... probably way more susceptible to breaking if you go down than the aluminum version.

Hey everybody, I logged into the photo album again and reset my password so the photos now are shown, sorry about that.

Funny thing is I just remodified the throttle thsi past weekend by grinding away so of the initial pvc to make the roll on a little smoother initially and then wide open from 1/2 on. When I ride in the desert in the dunes it worked great, when I was riding ocitillo in the technical sections i needed the first twist to be a little smoother and then kick it. I've yet to try at Ocitillo.

For all of those people that buy the aluminum throttle tube then great, you just spent 90 bucks on something that you can make for less than $5. I would always recommend buying an extra stock throttle just so you can always go back.

If you jet your carb, and set your AP up correctly, you will not have the need to pull the slide up as far to get good HP. I turn my throttle half as much as I used to with the same acceleration.

You should know, oddles of pros run a similar setup, so its not just jetting yada yada. Its about positioning, grip, a bunch of stuff, and I'm going to give it a shot.

I have to say I modified my original design about a week ago to smooth out the initial roll on and it works even better now, it's not quite as touchy in the technical rides and yet still allows faster thottle response and less twist.

The original design works great for high speed riding like the dunes but needed to be smoothed out for technical touchy areas. Now it's the best of both worlds. Its the same idea as the G2 throttle without spending 100 bucks.

I would like to see pix of the modded mod if you have any to show that better transition you like. I have that hiccup bog when you hit the throttle too hard, happens even if bike is well warmed up. May try PowerNow or try to figure out that AP item mod to accompany this one. Great post by the way.

Might want to try and move your jet needle clip position a notch or go up on the pilot jet a size. I had to do both when I installed a Full DRD exhaust system on my o6. I have the 1/4 turn throttle mod also and works great.

thanks man, i will be headed to home depot tomorrow for this. i have broken my wrist so much that a bone graft was required leaving me with about 65% movement. i love quick turn throttles but did not want to pay $100ish for it.

This mod really helps if you have limited movement in the wrist.

I might try this before I go riding again. I'm pretty tall so when I'm standing up if I go wfo it's very very awkward. My elbow drops so low. Plus I won't have to worry about regripping and all that now. Since I'm on a 125 and am rarely pinned because it's so awkward hopefully this will help me out a lot.
