XR650 Oil Pump Flowrate?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know what the normal oil pump flowrate is for an XR650 (rpm?)? I am trying to determine the pressure drop for an oil cooler. I understand that the XR650 uses two oil pumps. What would be an acceptable pressure drop for an oil cooler?

I don't know the flow rate, but I think you will find that it doesn't matter.

It's a positive displacement lobe style pump. It will pump at whatever pressure is required, but the flow rate is fixed by the rpm. There are actually two pumps. The first scavanges the crankcase and sends the oil to the frame tube. The other takes the oil from the frame tank and supplies the engine. I believe that the oil cooler normally goes between the first oil pump and the tank. The output pressure of the first pump is zero since the frame tank is venterd through the engine to the atmosphere. As long as the drop is only a few psi then I think that you will have no issues with whatever kind of oil cooler that you use. I would guess that even if the drop was 20 psi or more you would still be fine.

You put the cooler on the return-to-tank side,so there is no pressure as it`s just dumping oil into the frame,,thus no drop...

By the way...one part of the pump scavenges the crankcase and pumps oil to the frame,,that part also supplies unfiltered oil to the transmission too..

The other part of the pump takes oil from the frame and filters it,,,and supplies oil to the head and also the crank,,which lubes the cylinder wall and both rod ends...

The XR650LXR600R has basically no oil pressure when warmed up...maybe 2-3 pounds.......it does have flow though, and since it`s a ball/roller bearing engine...no actual oil pressure is needed........just good flow..

Guys i go back through the old stuff every now and then, sometimes i bring back something of interest knowing it's ancient but can help someone or is just funny as fug, in hindsight i don't think i'll do it anymore though as it seems to bring out the worst in some ppl who are apparently happy to wade through dozens of the old "what color my chainguard" or "My TM won't work properly Waaah waaa" threads of boredom.

Nah fug'em it's interesting to most ppl.
