I know the BBR cradle helps out but I know that there are other frame mods that some of you guys have tried out.  Zook did you ever post pics of the mods to your frame?  They sounded pretty professional.

Would be good to have a list of recommended frame mods on the forum.

Hi Zook - Just getting my frame mods done now.  Can you canfirm what size plate used for gussets and tabs etc.  Looks like 3mm but just wanted to check.  I have a guy working on the structural steel for my house and he is a VERY tidy welder and says that he'll do it for a few beers!

nice...:D

its about 3.3mm...or exactly 1/8 inch...that is with primer and paint... :applause:

so about 3mm, and its regular steel, not chromo.  he said regular steel is more rigid...

glad to say that the gussets he installed are holding up very well, no cracking or bending anywhere...and this is with 60foot+ jumps with my fat ass on it...  I did a bit of inspection when i did my swingarm bearings

Thanks Zook.  That is what I guessed.  I'll post pics when mine is done.  I have a hand built British frame for an RL250 that has similar strengthening gussets on it.  I'll try and replicate some of the finishing details from that.

Just been looking closely now at Zooks chassis mods.  Couple of things have crossed my mind.   The lower strenthening between the sub frame and main frame looks spot on, but I'm wondering if it is needed at the top of the sub frame.  The stock construction here looks very similar in strength to my KX250 and sons CR85.  The other area I'm wondering about is the strenghtening to the shock tower.  Has anyone had any problems with the shock tower moving .. this looks pretty strong in std form and I'm not sure that the butterflies would do a lot if this there were forces around sufficient to move the tubular tower.

The strenthening around the lower linkage and tabs looks very good.  Am I right in thinking that this is the main area that the frame craps out?  Have there been any reports of frame failure in other areas?

the tabs are the biggest concern.  The guy that did the welding said that the rest would just make the bike more rigid.  And it did, you can feel it.  He also said he worked on a TTR that snapped the shock tower...

hey rockycrawler .. that is a bit harsh!! Zook has done a great job developing his bike and sharing unlimited info with us all.  Best to keep this sort of forum constructive and positive.  Zooks welds look fine .. I've seen much worse!   ... and the vast majority are under the plastics or down by the linkage anyway.

Negative posts like that make folk hesitant about posting pics of thier mods which is to everyones disadvantage.  .... I was going to post a pic of my wife but now I'm sort of not sure ....LOL!!

Thanks for all the info and advice Zook!

:worthy: No worries .... I'm sure Zook is still sleeping well.  Just a gentle nudge to remind you that there are some sensitive souls out there. :worthy:  Now we are all in positive mode perhaps I'll find that pic of the wife.  LOL ... and I'll put up my weld pics for your professional scrutiny when they're done :worthy:

Hey Zook  .. just finishing off my templates to make up the gussets etc and was wondering if you needed to modify the BBR cradle once you thinkened up the engine mounting tabs? .. looks to me that I'll need to take 3mm of each side of the cradle mounts to accomodate the thicker tabs.
