07 Yz450 Low End

Recommended Posts

I've ridden my new YZ at two tracks, one having long straights and sweeping turns. The bike was great there no problem. The second is tighter lots of jumps out of the corners. I really felt the lack of low end and wanted to know what quick fix is there beside a new header, Zip Ty or AP mod? I have a race this coming weekend at the tighter track and any suggestions would be great.

I would go down a tooth in the front its cheaper to change the front than the rear.

Those are the two best options for the low end, especially if you don't want to have to always change the sprockets for whatever track you go to. BUt for the next race it sounds like you should add two teeth to the rear sprocket.

Hey motoheads

Has anybody put a 51 tooth sprocket on their YZ? How did it work. I think it would be a little better for the trails and also good for the track. They come "tall" i think They come w/49

OK so I put on the 51 and it really helped the gap between 2nd and 3RD. I was able to pull 3RD through corners opposed to using the 49 where as I had to shift down to 2nd then a quick shift to 3rd upon exit. I liked it so much I'm going to leave it on no matter what track I'm at. I recommend going up a tooth or two for motocross for any one with an 07. Thanks for all the feed back.:applause:

I tried the 50 tooth on my 07 450 and went back to the 49. ... I felt the 50 made me want to shift more.
Exactly. Unless you can find somewhere on the race track where 2nd is too low, you might try dropping a tooth or two instead. Lowering your gearing makes the gear spacing in the trans seem closer, and you have to shift more. Going higher spreads the gears out, so you shift less.

Anyway, gearing is no more the answer to better bottom end power than shifting from 2nd to 1st is. Do the Zip-Ty mod, get a Dr.D exhaust or similar, and that will boost your low end.

I am running a 50 and really like it. I can use 3rd a lot more and that is how I like to ride. If its lugging to much, a quick stab at the clutch and it starts pulling. I havent raced with it yet, but I think its going to be what I stick with.

I agree about the exhaust and after hearing goods things about MRD-racing I went to their site and filled out their questionnaire. Well to my surprise Dave gave me a call, answered all my questions about a boost to the low end and gave me a quote. Very cool!!! That made my decision a lot easier.:applause:
