Engine Life Expectancy for XR650L

Recommended Posts

New to the forum and would like someone to give me an honest assessment of what kind of life expectancy one can achieve on a XR650L? I am considering buying a 2001 with 21,000km on the clock. Is this alot of Km's for this bike. With my KLR650 it would not be but this being an air cooled engine I'm not sure.Any opinion and examples of high milage XR650's would be appreciated. Also lke all makes of bikes there are certain weaknesses in the design. Are there any particular to the Xr650L and what things should I be on the lookout when buying one of these bikes? Thanks!

20,000 kms is not that many if the bike has been treated nicely. By nicely I mean oil changed regularlly, valves adjusted, and not ridden too hard. There have been reports here on Thumper Talk of 650L lasting as long as 100,000 kms. I would think that top end work would be needed sometime around 50,000. Usually the valves are the first part to show issues.
