However if the bike is discontinued....will the parts availability dry up as well ???

I think there is enough of these bikes on the road they wont discontinue parts for a long time.

I do not think you will have a problem with parts for at least 10-15 years, between the aftermarket and ebay you should be able to find anything for the bike. I have been tempted to sell mine by some generous offers but I keep telling myself, I cant sell this bike, its too valuable to me!

XR's last forever, I rode with a guy that has an 83 XR500 totally neglected and it still runs like a champ.

No shit he just changed the air filter for the first time a few weeks ago. It was disintegrating in his hands as he pulled it out. I'm not sure he even changed the oil regularly. these Aircooled XRs can take some abuse.
