I feel dumb for even posting this, but what the heck, it's winter and I can't ride.

Sometimes I take my 2006 YZ250F on trail rides, and I'm afraid of running out of gas if we end up "deep in the woods", or if we were to take a wrong turn or two. I have no gas gauge, so if I ran out, I would just be out, somewhere in the woods. Now granted, I ride with friends, and they would help; but wouldn't it be great if I could "run out", then switch to reserve and at least get closer to a road, or closer back to camp? For riding motocross, I could just leave it on reserve.

In 2006, the WR still had the steel frame, so you couldn't just buy one of those year's petcocks for your 2006 YZ250F (the fuel line comes out the "wrong" side). Maybe you could make it fit; I didn't want to try.

Now in 2007, the WR gets the aluminum frame, and wahoo, I can just buy a 2007 WR250F petcock for my 2006 YZ250F (this would probably work for a 2007 YZ250F too, but I didn't test it). You don't actually get any more fuel; just a warning that you're going to run out.

This is what my fuel switch looks like stock.

Here is my technical write-up of said installation.

1. Ascertain what tools will be required
Posted Image

2. Remove old petcock (remove those phillips-head screws)

3. Compare 2006 YZ250F stock to 2007 WR250F stock. You can see I get about an inch or so of fuel level to go when I hit reserve.
Posted Image

4. Switch the fuel line over to the new petcock

4. Install the new one (like I said, I feel dumb for even writing this up; it couldn't be easier, just a bolt-off, bolt-on affair)

Here is what it looks like on the bike. No fit issues that I could see.

I put gas in it. It didn't leak.

(sigh) only five more weeks until spring...

It was like fifty bucks from my dealer! Not super cheap. You could probably find it cheaper, like here at TT.

I don't know if the WR tank size is the same.

Here in MN we got up to 45 degrees F yesterday! I guess that's why I kinda got "spring fever" already.

I rode my XR100 on a (frozen) river on Sunday, and I had to use my reserve tank. It's a nice feature to have in that situation. I stopped pinning it everywhere, and just tried to cruise home leisurely (trying to conserve gas). I got home no problem, but it was nice to be able to "run out", and know that if I took it easy, I could at least get closer to home.

I had a similiar search while setting my RM250 up with a desert tank. Here is the meat of my posting in the RM 2 stroke forum.

OK I have found out some things.

I don't have measurements for you but apperantly a Husky reserve will work. I stopped by a friendly local shop and was talking when I thought to ask to see one of their petcocks. Same mounting holes but the face of the lever was pointing a slightly different direction.

Then as I went through another shop I asked if they had any petcocks and they had a Acerbis "universal" reserve with similiar mounting and another valve face configuration. Price like $18.95

Point is they will work..... Next question is if the on/reserve will be enough to get you back to camp etc.

I think the "not on new suzukis" attitude has to do with the new aluminum paremeter frames on the 4 strokes. The petcock is mounted to the frame and it would be near impossible to have a reserve circuit run from the petcock into the tank and be practical.

Rhino

the RMZ's have the petcock mounted to the frame not the tank and a hose runs from the petcock to the tank. That would make a reserve (a 2 stage tube set up, see your pics above)

$20 bucks is better than $50! :applause:

Can you post the part number for the 07 WR250F's petcock?

They don't have the 07 WRs or YZ250Fs listed at the official Yamaha web site. :applause:

The Australian site had the manuals for the 06 & 07 YZ250Fs:

06 YZ250F's manual.

07 YZ250F's manual.

The 07 WR450F's manual is here, but I don't see the part number for the "fuel cock" in there anywhere...

I'm going to be putting my clarke 2.6 tank on sometime this weekend. I ordered 2 06 wr 250f fuel petcocks so I can change the way the lines go. I'm not sure yet how I'm going to run the fuel line on the right side.:applause:

FUEL COCK ASSY 1

(by the way, why don't we universally just change that to "fuel switch" so I don't feel weird describing what I've done to my bike every time .)
