I was riding in 5th gear wide open and something broke in the engine. It didn't seize or loose power. Just a clanking from the left side of the engine. Any ideas on what to check? I just bought a WR450 so I'd like to get the 426 running to sell.

One common noise that develops in the early 426 is when the primary drive gear bolt loosens and allows the balancer drive gear to rattle around on its key. Usually beats up the key, and if not dealt with, the crank, too.
