Aftermarket stuff that will fit a DRZ400SM

Recommended Posts

In order that others will not make the same mistake I have made, could the DRZ400SM owners in this forum help to contibute on the aftermarket stuff that can be bought from the TT Store or other sites that will fit onto the bike without the aggravation and frustration.

Not everything that can be used on the DRZ400S can be used on a DRZ400SM though they do share alot of the parts available.

Me recent mistakes were the Dynojet kit, the rear rotor and now the front oversize rotors. All I wanted was to upgrade the looks and performance of the bike but so far it has been a journey of frustrations.

Please help with your invaluable contributions.

For a start, I bought these aftermarket parts and they fit easily -

Raptorz - it's a great idea & i hope it will become a sticky at the end!

Call them up and tell them what you want, they know the DRZ and won't steer you wrong.

although TT shop is always my first choice and whenever i want something for my bike i contact them first - the guys in the shop are not eddie... like my latest experience with 320mm rotor & bracket, I had nick from TT shop who did his best and contact Bracking and they assured him it will fit and it didn't... now i don't find nick or TT shop responsible for it but the bottom line is that i got an un fit parts for my bike.

here's my short list of parts i got from TT shop that fit:

Yoshi 11,000 CDI Rev Box - Part# YOSHIMURA_2165-11K

SUPERMOTARD F FEND BLK

Trailtech Z400/DRZ400 Flywheel

Hotcams CAMSHAFT EXHAUST LTZ/KFX

Hotcams CAMSHAFT INTAKE LTZ/KFX

Hotcams VALVE SHIM KIT 9.48MM OD

Yoshi DRZ400 00-04 TRS SYS SA

DRZ400 FCR-MX Conversion Kit

Fom the top of my head...

Here's a list of parts that gave me zero greif:

Acerbis Supermoto Front fender (TT store)

Acerbis Radiator Shrouds and Frame Side Covers (Motorsports)

White Brothers Skid Plate (TT store)

Case savers - ignition side only (TT store)

SFB racing clutch cover (TT store)

SFB chain guide (local store)

Zeta brake and clutch lever (Wheeling Cycle Supply)

Zeta chain guard (Wheeling Cycle Supply)

Pro Taper SE 7/8 bars Carmichael bend (Ebay US)

Note: These bars are real loooow, which is what I wanted BUT might interfere with your setup

Axle sliders front and rear / peg sliders (Ebay UK)

Bar end sliders (Motostrano)

Tag Metals front sprockets (13T/14T) (Motorsports)

DID ERV2 chain (Motorsports)

Titan tough ultralite 38T rear sprocket (Sprocket Specialists)

Little grief:

B&B case saver (Tom Beckett Ebay UK)

Problem: bolts were too short. No biggie... but why?!?

IMS 3.2 Gallon tank

Problem: OEM spacers did not fit properly. Had to improvise.

Unabiker radiator guards (TT store)

Problem: Tight fit, but that's expected, every bike is different. BUY LONGER BOLTS FOR THE RAD SHROUDS LOWER ANCHOR.

Cycra Probend Hand guards (Cycra Racing)

Problem: You need to fit them to your handlebar, that's expected. Takes a little work but worth it.

OEM Euro tailight (Ebay UK)

Problem: Does not fit 100% but not noticeable unless you suffer from OCD.

More grief than they should:

Works Connection Aluminum frame guards (TT store)

Problem: The part is manufactured with tolerances that are TOO TIGHT. If your frame is a little off,

you will have to drill the recessed screw holes to enlarge them. No big deal...

Except that after I did it and got the screws to line up, a 10mm socket WOULD NOT FIT in the recessed holes,

making tightening the screws and the whole installation much more of a pain in the neck then it has to be for such a simple part.

Not everybody has a perfedctly welded frame or access to a lathe... Why not make these recessed holes a tad bigger?!?

Edit: Looking at the part lists, one can tell that auto160 is all perf while I'm all bling. I think if we swapped bikes for 6 months me might come up with the perfect SM.

Just saw the note on my door when I got home just now... they have delivered the EBC oversized front rotor and relocating bracket and its with the apartment complex front office.

Will pick up tomorrow and try and fit it on and see what disparity can be found.

Will keep you guys posted with pics so that you guys can appreciate and not make the same mistake I have made.

EBC SX Countour Front 310mm Rotor from TT (Parts Unlimited catalog, hard to find unless you browse by catalog.)

EBC Contour Rear Rotor from Rocky Mtn. ATV (For whatever reason TT doesn't list this one, maybe they can get it though.)

How about rear disc and caliper guards? I know zeta makes a disc guard. Any others? Would any for an RMZ450 fit?

ilsrwy27, did you get the works carbon fiber frame guards from TT listed for DRZ400/E/S? These are what I want next as I'm rubbing the paint off my frame. I think I will try them despite your trouble, unless there are other carbon fiber ones available, thanks for the warning though.

if it's the 320 mm ebc i'm thinking of, it will not fit the sm model. e,s or kick model, yes.

someone please correct me if i am wrong.

I got the works connection ALUMINUM frame guards from the TT store.

Sorry I will edit my previous post to add that info.

And yes, I got them to work OK, and I would buy them again.

It is just aggravating that they were such a pain to install.

All it would take to make it a 10 minute job would be for them to increase the diameter of the recessed holes by a fraction...

So... what has been said is true.

First the rotor looks mean when mounted on the rim.

But the relocating bracket that comes with the kit ain't worth a crap.

The bolts that come with the kit for mounting the bracket to the forks are way too long. Got some replacement bolts of the correct length and tried again. Now it was difficult to put the caliper on relocating bracket. The rotor was like in the way and had to squeeze it in.

When I tried to mount the 2 bolts that secured the caliper to the bracket in its new position... one would fit and then the other hole misaligned. When I tried to align it.. the caliper hit the inside of the rim.

Thats when I called Nick at the Thumpertalk shop. He told me that the bracket is meant for the DRZ400S forks which are either not the same or not inverted like the DRZ400SM hence the disparity of fitment.

He offered a way out though... Braking has come out with a new bracket to allow the 320mm rotor to be used on a DRZ400SM, needless to say... I ordered it.

Hopefully this will put an end to this trying to put on a 320mm brake rotor on the front wheel saga. :censored:

You will need a Braking POW02 bracket. It's like $72 from the TT Store.

Hope you are right coz I just ordered it from Nick of TT Store. He also said it will work with the EBC Pro-Lite 320mm coz it was designed to fit on an SM for use with any oversized 320mm rotors.

Although with the bracket would set the caliper in a position that will cause the outer 9mm of the brake pads to be unused.. I can live with the loss of that small contact area which would be offset by extra braking power from an oversized rotor...and the satisfaction of having a gorgeous looking oversized rotor on the front wheel.

The options I have would be to look for a different sized brake pads which will increase the pad contact area or just cut off the excess brake pad material with a hacksaw.

After all, desperation is the mother of innovation.

i'm a little confused.

if you just want to upgrade "looks", why not just purchase a nice 310 mm aftermarket rotor.

AFAIK, the bracket is made for the s, e or kicker model. sm uses different forks with different mounting location.

even when using the ebc 320 mm rotor with bracket on the e, s or kicker, the pads need to be removed from the caliper before the caliper can be mounted.

Braking POW02 is for the SM

Braking POW06 is for the S & E

even when using the ebc 320 mm rotor with bracket on the e, s or kicker, the pads need to be removed from the caliper before the caliper can be mounted.

I managed to fit the caliper with the POW02 bracket with the pads on 320mm rotor without any problem.

USING THE POW02 WILL NOT GIVE YOU A FULL SURFACE CONTACT BETWEEN THE PADS AND THE ROTOR.
