The Washington State legislature has a bill before it that would allow hunting from an ORV.

http://www.leg.wa.go...0Bills/5185.pdf

At first glance I thought, sure that sounds fine.

Then I had this vision of three toothed Willy jammin' down the trails near the Tahuya pheasent release area on his quad, blasting his shotgun on the fly.

That didn't sound so good.

it is a good idea for a Handy Cap person to get into areas not as accessable any other way for them.
as for the general public NO WAY should they allow it.

I have always viewed hunting as a small part of it is actually shooting, and a large part is the excercise and peace and quiet of being in the woods with no motors rattling around.

If a person is too lazy to walk through the woods, I don't think they should be hunting (handicapped is a different story). If it's super easy to get where the game is, hunters won't appreciate it as much-something to be said for working to fill your freezer.

Is the game population's that out of control that the state needs to make it easier to kill more critters?

As an avid hunter and dirtbiker I think it can work itself out. If three toothed billy bob is running his quad around shooting everything then report him. He would loose his gun, quad, truck and a bunch of money, as it is illegal to shoot from a motorized vehicle. I have heard no change in this law. And any slef respection (non-diabled) hunter would not want to hunt in an area full of bikes. do a few laps around them and they will leave. We don't shoot from our bikes and dont ride (much) during hunting season. Its all about respecting others both hunters and bikers.

SB5185 would change that.

Dont worry, here is a quote from the bill "No person may operate a nonhighway vehicle in such a way as to endanger human life" and I think that would cover your scenario. Beside, I think its illegal to shoot people already be it on a quad or foot. I have bow hunted from my Quad several times. We didnt really hunt from the quad, just used it to get way back in where no one else was. Park them, walk in, set up treestand.

handicap people are already able to hunt from vehicles depending on their hadicap.

All from an OHV park:thumbsup:  .Posted Image

Grindstone OHV area(stonyford) in Cal, is hunted quite a bit during hunting season. The deer are used to the commotion. Stonyford is a big OHV park. Some of the smaller parks have rules against the discharge of firearms.

I am not sure why anyone would hunt while on an ORV??? I've seen plenty of guys using dirtbikes in the Gifford Pinchot to get around but the bikes are just transportation. Shooting from a moving position is not the best and in some cases not safe. hmmm, back to my original question,, why would you hunt from an ORV?

Are you sure youre reading that right??

Quote

to run down or harass any wildlife or animal, nor carry, transport, or
convey any loaded weapon in or upon, nor hunt from, any nonhighway
vehicle
except: (a) By permit issued by the director of fish and

authorized by the legislative authority of a county. It shall not be
unlawful to carry, transport, or convey a loaded pistol in or upon a
nonhighway vehicle if the person complies with the terms and conditi

Seems pretty straight forward, no loaded weapons while transporting, so no shooting on the fly.

Ive seen a lot of hunters using quads to get around inside of Walker Valley, talked to a guy who hunts bear out of there with good success.

Hope it not the same guy that has been dumping bear carcasses there.
That is not fun for the volunteers to clean up.

RCW 77.32.237 is for disabled hunters, i think this would allow them to hunt from their quad, but not necessarily on the fly. I thought this had always been the case anyway. Provision B i guess could open it to anybody, but what county would allow it??

Thats nasty!! I know the guy i met was big into bear hunting and lived right down the street forom the rear entrance. Last year we found where somebody had dumped a bunch of pig carcasses way the hell out in the North Fork area. Scumbags!!!

Legislative language does not happen without someone wanting it.
My guess is that would be at least one of the counties that the bill sponsors represent.
They are Senators Morton, Roach, Holmquist, Swecker, Clements and McCaslin.

I hate the thought of ANY gun slinging three toothed hick within a 50 mile radius of where I like ride. Sounds like a South Park episode just waiting to happen! Hunting and ORV parks should NOT mix, quads and ORV parks are bad enough.

I have spent quite a bit of time in the woods during hunting season, usually on a mtb. There are always hundreds of stupid rednecks driving on the roads about 2mph, just thinking a big buck is going to jump into the road and sit there. If you actually get away from your beer cooler and step into the bush that is where the deer are. During the last 2 opening weeks of hunting I have had 4pt bucks within 8 feet of me, and that is on a motorcycle in tight singletrack. On foot you will find more. Deer may be stupid prey but they are at least smart enough to stay the hell off of the roads during hunting season.

I think an ATV would be nice to get to where you are going to start walking (if a truck can't get there), and probably useful to haul a dead animal on, but I don't think hunting from one is very effective.

You would be surprised. This comming from a guy who passes 4-5 point bucks a day at his house to drive out in the woods and see a bunch of does. Maybe I am just a bad hunter?

As long as your shots are safe ones and there are no legal issues with it, I don't see the problem. I just would rather hunt in hunting area and ride in ridding areas (during hunting season). My biggest problem with hunting in popular areas is that I am afraid some nut job will shoot me. IT happends every year in Idaho. Public land (near spokane) is almost un-huntable anymore. Too many californians have moved here and road hunt were I use to sit in stands and set up drives. Anyway.

I agree hunting is more enjoyable when the forest stays quiet and the work and excercise make it more satisfying when bringing home the kill, however I don't see the harm in using an ORV to get close to the hunting grounds provided it's utilizing a spark arrestor AND silencer. Not any different than driving a truck to the same destination. Now if a person is driving around LOOKING for game (ORV or truck) to shoot, that IS and should remain ILLEGAL!! I believe it is an unethical way to hunt and so does every other ETHICAL hunter out there. IMO.

YEA, what dirtbeater said. Reporting someone is the most effective way to deter others from going down the wrong path. It's a pretty nasty consequence to pay for a completely avoidable sitiuation. One word: RESPECT!!

Someone should send an email to the writers of South Park.

I could argue both ways depending on the circumstances - nice quiet ohv, go out in the early hours, turn off - hunt, then if lucky not have to drag an animal home,

On the other hand a bunch of you-know-who's riding around scaring up game? Yuck.

Either way it would have been nice if a distant relative of mine could use his quad in TX. For reasons real or imagined he could not use his quad to hunt there. Avid hunter and has lost both legs above the knee.
