Craigslist Scam using BuySAFE.

Recommended Posts

I was looking on Craig's list and Cycle Trader for a new (used) dirt bike. I emailed a guy in Tucson with a MINT almost new left over Honda XR650R for super cheap. He emailed me right back stating that he uses BuySAFE to make sure people feel comfy about his transactions. In fact he says the bike is already in BuySAFES possession for quick and easy shipping. He says I have 14 days to check out the bike when it arrives. If I am unhappy I will get a refund in 3 days. Then he asks for all my information so that he can start the BuySAFE process.

None of this process matches BuySAFE's description on their website. I write buy safe and get the following information:

  • buySAFE is NOT a payment service, nor an escrow service.
  • buySAFE does NOT collect or hold money from buyers in a transaction and we do not ask for or accept money or money orders from buyers.
  • buySAFE's services are only available to sellers and items which reside inside the United States of America and its territories.
  • buySAFE's services are NOT available for items sold offline.
  • At this time, buySAFE's services are ONLY available on select retail Websites and the following marketplaces: eBay, Overstock.com Auctions, and TIAS.com. (Please note:
  • buySAFE is NOT currently partnered with Craigslist or AutoTrader, so transactions on those marketplaces will NOT be bonded by buySAFE).
  • Any buySAFE Webpage will begin with www.buysafe.com, or shopping.buysafe.com, club.buysafe.com, or www.buysafeshopping.com.
  • When you verify a buySAFE Seal directly from an item listing, you should see the URL http://www.buysafe.com/verifyseal.asp in your browser address bar.
  • Again, ALWAYS look for and verify the buySAFE Seal to ensure a bonded transaction is valid.
  • If you encounter an instance where buySAFE is being presented in a manner inconsistent with the list above, please avoid the transaction at all costs and report it to buySAFE immediately.

Please be very careful of this scam.

HOLY CRAP... I've been emailing this guy yesterday about the Honda 650 for 2400. He goes by the name of Nick. Gave me the same spiel about Buysafe. Check out the emails we have been sending.

Here is his ad http://dallas.craigslist.org/mcy/248032282.html

Hi Andy,

I understand your concern but i will receive the money only after you will receive and inspect the bike.As i told you, you have to send them the payment information to buySafe, they will verify it and proceed with the shipping. You will have 14 days Return Policy in which you will inspect the bike and inform them if you keep it or not. If you decide to keep it, they will release me the funds, if not, you will have a complete refund within 3 days. So if you are interested please email me your shipping details so we can proceed.

Thanks.

Nick,

I saw this bike on the Dallas Craigs list and thought it was local, I like to see a bike in person, see it start and test ride before laying any money down.

Thanks for your time.

Andy

Hi Andy,

I left the bike in BuySafe custody so I can have it sold without difficulty and they will ship it from Nevada. So if you want to purchase it i will need your full name and shipping address so we can proceed. As soon as I receive these information, I will forward it to BuySafe and as soon as they have all the details, they will start the transaction and notify you with all you need to know regarding it (payment instruction, shipping, my account status etc).As soon as the payment is complete, you have to send the payment information to BuySafe, they will verify it and proceed with the shipping. You will have 14 days return policy, so you will have the chance to inspect the bike and inform them if you keep it or not. If you decide to keep it, they will release me the funds, if not, you will have a complete refund within 3 days. So I am waiting your email.

Thanks.

Flagged down by Craigslist.

Never heard of BuySafe-sounds kinda like a wanna-be PayPal-like thing-a-ma-jig.

No BuySAFE BONDs the transaction. It protects you from misrepresented products from sellers. Highend Power Sellers on Ebay and other website selling organizations use it to offer confidence to buyers. This scum bag on Craigslist is in the UK and signs up for new Yahoo accounts everyday and gets shut down as fast as they find them... He uses BuySAFES name to give you a false sense of security as he steals your money... I just spoke with BuySAFE and they said even the FBI is involved.

I wouldn't buy remotely with Craigslist. I would only do an in person exchange of cash for a bike. Before I hand over any cash I make sure that the title is OK too. Be very careful if there is a lien holder on the title. I would never give someone cash and trust them to use it to pay off the loan. I might go with them to the bank that holds the loan and be sure that it is paid in full.

I have purchased bikes for a few hunderd with only a bill of sale. However I don't think I would go much over $500 without a title.

I just countered offer him $2000, lets see if he take it. If he does, I'm gonna drop the bomb on him and go off like a maniac. This will be good entertainment.

?

I just sent the guy a counter offer of $2000, he accepted it with no haggles, check out my reply.

Nick,

That sounds great, I'm very interested if the bike can be ridden naked, have you ever ridden the bike naked? I belong to the Gay men of America riding club, would that be of some interest to you. How much extra would you charge to send some nude photos of yourself sitting on the bike, I will thow in another $50 spot!

Get back to me soon, this whole transaction has me worked up... In a good way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, he replied back, so let me tone it down a bit and see if I can keep him communicating. LMAO!!!!

Nick,

I am so embarrassed by that last email, I thought I was replying to my significant other, he rides bikes to. Truly that last email was meant for someone else.

Lets get this transaction rolling, where do I send payment? I will get the money order ready ASAP.

Warm Regards,

Andy
