Has anyone pulled the header on their 650l and ground away the excess welds and if so did it make a decent improvement?

Yes. No.

The weld looked like it would be pretty restrictive and it LOOKED a lot better after I ground it down. I had high hopes. I couldn't feel any change in performance after the mod.

No.
Dont waste your time, just pony up the $ and get an xrs only or FMF header, or good luck finding a White bros. Then you will notice an improvement, where in the rpm range depends on which one you choose!
