Anyone tried the new Dunlop 745 ?

Recommended Posts

Why is everybody so down on the 739's? ? Its the only tire that sticks on blue groove. I'll admit that the 739 is not a great choice for all around use, but for slick tracks, the 739 is hard to beat.

I'm with you...I hear so much negative on these tires, but if I had to guess, most just throw them out based on what they've read here and have spent ZERO time on them to form their own opinion.

I ride hard pack and intermediate and to be honest, the 739 front hooks up quite well indeed. In fact, I was just thinking about this the other day - how well it hooks up for me. I just don't get it.

I've spent plenty of time on 739's. There's really no such thing as hardpack up here (except for very limited areas and if we are having a drought) so maybe that's why they have never been good for me.

Yeah, we had that discussion already. I still say it's a tossup which is better, the eponymous album or Paper Money. But certainly those are better than pre-Sammy and post-Sammy albums.

As for the D739's I think it's a decent front tire for riding in the desert. Definitely better than the M401's, but not as good as the Michelin Starcrosses (what is it, MH3?) that I have on my smoker. I'll probably go with them on the 450 when I switch or maybe the D952 Dunlops, I've heard good things about them as well, especially as being a good all around tire. Plus the price is good on them, certainly cheaper than the Michelins. Prices on these things are ridiculous. I just put a set of the top rated Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's on my car, 225/50/ZR16, and they were only $89 a tire, and there's a lot more rubber and equally as much technology there. Although I think MX tires are laid up by hand so that would make them cost more. And isn't it a D739F that comes on the YZ450F stock? Which is a slightly harder terrain tire than the standard D739 IIRC. So that could be a problem for people who ride in the soft stuff.

I got a set of the 745's and a combo of the D742FA front and a 952 rear. I put the odd combo on first and I am pleased! The 742FA is the new tire that comes on the 07 Hondas and I was amazed at the turn in response and ability to hold a line in almost any condition. The 952 is a proven performer so no surprise there but that 742FA is definitely a keeper. Once I wear these out I'll throw on the 745's, but this current combo is going to be tough to beat.

Unless the current 742FA is a major revision of the older, I'm surprised to hear that. I tried one on both bikes some time ago and wasn't really happy with it at all. It wasn't bad, exactly, it just wasn't very good. I like the 952 much better.

Front?

Front?
Yes, front. There is no 742 rear.

But as for 952's, they are great on both ends.

Well here in Ga/Al the 739 Dunlop is junk....I have probably 3 or 4 complete sets if anyone wants them......they are either brand new or 1 ride on them.....all have come off of 426/450s...just make offer + shipping.....and I will ship them to you:thumbsup:
Interestingly, at last year's San Diego Supercross, a high percentage of pros were running 739's

When track conditions CALL for it, the 739 was the best tire in the dunlop offerings. Everybody says is is so terrible, put them on a pure blue grove track and they would singing a much different tune. It is a good Hardpack only tire!

Front tires are so easy to change......no 1 tire will come close to simply having a few different terrain specific tires and using the one designed for your raceday conditions!

I hope this 745 is even better on hard pack tracks!

So I got a good look at one today, and it IS a major revision. Big time. The 742FA looks like an old 756 that was modified to work better on soils ranging into the harder. The tread layout is similar to the 756, but the block design is different (60% or more of them are cupped on the end for hard surfaces) and there are more of them. They are still smaller and wider spaced than a 739 was. Interesting tire,

The 745 is more like the old 739, but the tread's been re-arranged some, so that it looks more like an M602A than a 739. Just by looking, and judging by what they've done with the 952, I'd guess it has a wider range of functionality than the 739, and if you ride in predominantly harder soils, it might be worth trying.
