The BIG question. Can you expect to gain enough horsepower to make it worth while.

I am not sure how to respond to this post. I think if you actually read my posts to date I am pleased with the results so far. But to answer you question directly, why did you get on a bike in the first place? I understand this is a question to your question but think about it. Did you get on a bike because you always from childhood thought that motorcycles were appealing? Did you get on a bike because of the fuel economy? Did you get on a bike for the soul purpose of having the loudest bike around so everyone would look your way? I think the only answer to my question is you got on a bike because it was something you wanted to do, and that is my answer to your question. I don’t want to seem nasty but I really don’t care if it makes more power even though anyone who has any knowledge of FI knows that there are power gains, I really wanted to see if I could do it

Wish I had the ability to do it to my DR650.

You do, you might need to change the injector size and then get the right size throttle body. DONE!

I took the bike to work again today it is working well. I know I still have some tuning to do but I am very pleased so far. The bike definitely has a much better pull when you open the throttle riding a gear high. You really get to feel the torque the 350 has.

I have acquired a palm pilot for data logging. Tomorrow I will data log the ride to and from work and hope fully will be able to use that data in the tuning process.

I still have not used my wide band O2 set up. I would like to tune by feel and see what I can do before I use the wideband to autotune. I will have a file of both ways and it will be interesting to compare tune by feel and tune by technology.

I used the palm pilot to data log for a 25 minute ride but when I went to upload it I somehow crashed my palm pilot. I got it all working again and took a quick ride with the palm wire tied to the cross bar. The display on palm log shows real-time data on all the sensors. It verified my feeling that I was still rich, the O2 sensor indicated that. I will now lean it out some more and keep and eye on the O2 reading.

The best thing about this setup is instead of changing jets or clip positions you point and click. 30 seconds you can be out on the road or trail with a new “jetting” and you can have real time feed back.

That looks great. I like your vibration isolated ECU mount (just kidding). Not that it's bad with a DR350, but have you noticed an increase in fuel economy?

The ECU is going to end up in a rear fender pack but for pure access I put it where it is for now. Too funny my first highway cruise the fender was going up and down to the point I might have a problem so I reached out and held it steady. To tell you the truth I have no idea on what I am getting for MPG's I removed the entire stock instrument cluster.

Right now I have it where it is very ridable and makes more power than carb, with no way to back it up other than feel, so I am very pleased. I need to work on the start up enrichments and acceleration enrichments.

I would just like to reiterate that unless you are not totally dedicated and willing to put some time in then this mod is not for you. I really enjoy having the 350 as a test bed for the FI conversion. I am looking forward to doing a pure motocross bike when the microsquirt is released.

I noticed your DR is an electric start, do you think it would be possible to add FI to a Kick start Bike?

Getting the right amount of fuel at the right time could make some huge improvments to how these old kickers start, or am i blowing smoke out my arse?!?!

I bet you could do the kickstart by using a NiCad battery to do the initial prime for the fuel pump and ecu start up. Even put a switch to put the battery in the circuit loop until it starts then flip the switch to take it out of the loop. Just better hope you don't walk out to a dead battery and not be home. Instead of Nicad you could use 4 D cell batteries then if it won't start just walk into the gas station and buy a few!

Kick start is not a problem but you will need a battery that will drive the fuel pump about 5 amps. I have looked into gel cell alarm system 12 volt bateries that I think will have the balls to power the pump. The ECU draws very little power. There is a guy who megasquirted his kick start RZ 350.

I Did not have a chance to do any tuning this weekend it rained for three days straight. This week I am going to mount the ECU on the rear fender in a fender pack for protection. I am also going to install my wideband O2 sensor which is suppose to make it real easy to dial in the fuel needs based on the air fuel ratio. I am also going to mount my PDA on the cross bar in a semi permanent way so I have constant real time feedback.

Do you think the stock alternator would be able to keep a larger battery charged during short rides?

I often use my bike to pop into town for lunch etc and its only a 10 minute ride.

With FI and a bigger battery will the Alternator be able to keep up?

my gut feeling is that the alt. has sufficent reserve to run the 60w (5.5amps) of the pump ... you might want to take precautions and swap the rear light and turn signals for LEDs ...

I was going to go LED route if the the stock "alternator" did not have the nerve to drive the power requirements. But with the SE model I have plenty of power. You can even go with LED MR 16 headlight bulbs of ebay wich would open up an ton of amps but I don't think you would have good night time visibility.

Had a good ride to and from work again today. I have not had time to do any more tuning but the bike is running well but not totally dialed in. Now that formal riding season is here sundays are devoted to the 125 and the 350 sits. I hope to get some time in the very near future to complete the tuning process.

Just thought I would give an update. The bike is running good and so far i have not had a single reliability problem. I ride it to work 2-3 days a week, about 30-35 mile round trip depending on route. i still have to get an inspection sticker. I have july 4 week off so I will try to devote a solid day just to tuning and get it perfect.
