I wanted to run the race last year, but couldn't make it. I was looking at the stumpjumpers site and they're planning for Apr. 14-15 this year. My choice of bike will be either my xr650r or my cr500. I have no idea of what tires to run, fuel range needed and how many pits there will be. I have big tanks for both bikes as they're both street legal and spend most of the time in supermoto trim. I'm thinking the BRP will probably be the better choice, but it's a road princess and has never been off road. I'm 200lbs and the cr is sprung for my weight, the XR is all stock. Also, I have a lot more seat time on the CR. Anybody who has run the race before? I'd appreciate any feedback/help. Thanks

You'll need 50 mi + fuel range. Your one and only pit is after your first lap. If your comftorable doing 100 mi. on the CR I'd use that, there is some tight rocky stuff and the XR may tire you out un necessarily.

Run hard compound stiff sidewalls, I personnaly recommend a Maxxis Desert IT on the rear and on the front I would run a stiff Dunlop or something. Don't run the Maxxis IT on the front, you'll hate it!

There are water crossings that can be deep, you definately want to use a good thick oil on your filter and probably a filter skin.

Other than that, get your ass cheeks in shape and be prepared for a big and some times rowdy, crowd:busted:

Cool, I can't wait. I'm pretty sure the CR can do 50miles on a stock tank. I'll have to look into it.

I always like to error on the side of having a little more fuel than needed. :D :ride:

The other option sucks.

Did you say you had a large tank for the CR500? Ooo I see you said that the 500 is street legal *drool* You supermoto it? Sweet!

Rhino

I am not to picky with tires....I run intermediate/soft terrain tires there. Dunlop 752 or whatever the current version is called. I have a Bridgestone currently though the designation escapes me....it is a similiar tire to the Dunlop.

Don is faster than me so he needs a nice Desert tire. He put on a TON of miles last year.

Ultra HD tubs are nice insurance as well. I've always run them out there and never gotten a pinch flat.... even though I run my pressure a tad lower than what's recommended.

Hey K-ball, I rode my XR650R just in the Poker Run last year and it convinced me to upgrade the suspension. Ride the bike that is sprung correctly. There are just enough whoops that the big XR will kick you pretty good. Especially since you'll be in 4th and 5th a lot. That's what fun about terrain!!
So Stumpjumpers... April 14th & 15th looking like a firm date? I was looking at the calendar last night and looks like all the clubs are taking that date seriously. I'm looking forward to doing 2 laps of the Iron man or maybe one lap of each. Can't wait!!

It is a street legal motard. I made it quick to change back to dirt though. All the street stuff is in the headlight assy. Horn, reg/rect,batt, flasher. So it all disconnects and unbolts in 5 min. and I can bolt a reg. number plate to it and the rear has 2 screws for the lic. plate and lights. All i've managed to do with it so far is wipe out. Here's a few pics:

My xr650r is also a street legal motard most of the time. It's a better commuter than the CR.

Wow, that is awesome. I'd have soooOOOO many tickets with that thing. That CR500 "hit" on the blacktop must be a rush! I was tempted to supermoto my 650R, but didn't trust myself to keep it tame. They really frown on wheelies in traffic down here. :) I saw more supermoto bikes this summer than ever. I'm sure there will be even more next summer with the 07' road legal KTMs.

The Dez 100 is like an annual pilgrimage for many. The poker run on saturday is a blast; the remote lunch stop is a welcomed sight; and the trophies & contingencies are incredible. But be prepared to ride with 2000 of your fellow dirt bikers. Although there's a lot of people, it doesnt' seem that crowded once out on the course.

The race is epic. From the massive starting line and bomb run to the numerous crashes you will witness by fools riding way over their heads. Then once things settle down, it is wahoo fun. The miles seem to click on by.

The Stumpjumpers put on a great event. Definately worth the drive & effort to get there.

KBALL, here's a tip

Don't try to run that 17" front in the desert. I may be sweeping the course and don't want to have to tell you "told ya so".

If you run the 17s make sure to bring your own hot dog. ;-)

Actually, I've got a bit of time on 17s, you guys would be really surprised how well they work off-road - even with slicks. You could definitely make it around last year's course, it wouldn't be the fastest way but you could do it.

Oh man, the 17's are great in dirt, pavement, grass fields, sidewalks, stairs, whatever. But I think i'll pass and run 18/21 wheels for the dez100.

ya, one piece of advice... try to avoid the rocks and sagebrush. last year my dads friend was in 13th on a kx 500 and about 200 yards from the finesh he hit a wrock and it flung him and he broke the bone next to his collar blade (on the top of his back behind the collar bone im not sure what its called). but he did end up pushing through and got 15th. i myself am planning on racing in the 15 and under class on my '00 kdx 200. two laps is a little much for me yet...
