The plug by the handles bars is for the oil, correct? Dumb question, but have never seen that before.

On a 400/426 the oil fill is right behind the handle bars and just in front of the gas tank on the frame.

and check it after warming up at least 10 min. not by the morning on a cold engine

You've had that bike kind of a long time now not to know how to check and change the oil. Better download a manual and read up:
