I'm looking at the pic - what exactly is the issue with it?? The link doesn't work.

It took me a while to figure out this morning as well.

The WR's use a steel wire to retain the filter and the screw hole you see in the filter is left open and will allow dirt to enter the engine. I have not taken my filter out to check yet, but that doesn't look good.

Thanks for that. If the wire just presses the filter into place and uses the groove on the plastic piece for alignment, then an easy enough fix would be to just fill the hole with some kind of sealant or just plug it with a screw or bolt with some sealant on it.

Also, I'm curious if the plastic piece is moulded to the filter, or does it come off for cleaning etc. I'd hate to have to squeeze that sucker while cleaning with the plastic still in place.

the plastic cage does seperate from the foam for cleaning

be careful using sealent it may come loose and get sucked into piston

Good point. A better solution would be a snug fitting bolt with a very light coating of RTV Silicon sealant - the flanged head of the bolt will keep it from being sucked into the carb/motor.

Like the other bloke said, there is a hole straight down the guts of the filter, only the retaining wire goes over it, I just no one has dusted their motor yet!!

The link does work, I just checked it...........the picture is on tt now anyway.

I just checked mine and it is the same. A hole straight through. I took it to the dealer to notify them and while I was there we took a look an 07 WR250 he had and it was solid like it was suppose to be. I don't know if Yamaha has two suppliers and one of them screwed up or what. The dealer got on the phone to Yamaha and the guy said he was going to go check it out.
