In search of 55hp

Hey, I figured I would throw this out there. Have a yosh full system on my 07. It is great, But I am still looking for more "beef", getting me up to the 55 hp range. The one thing I miss about my 06' CRF 450 Race bike was the torquey beef i had in the upper-low to mid. I dyno'd the bike and it came in at 55hp with a cam, pipe, etc.

What are my cost effective options....HC piston (colorado), Cam....? head port? any experience?

let me know what the dyno says whats your elevation

I will, and I am at 5000 elev at the shop that is going to dyno it.

Does anyone have first hand experience with different cams, HC pistons, and different companies port jobs? I am trying to figure which is the best bang for the buck before the first race in a few months...

The power you describe wont be found in horsepower. Horsepower has nothing to do with that "torquey beef" you want. The cheapest way to change how the power is put to the ground that is usually overlooked is to re-gear. Horsepower has nothing to do about how the motor pulls through the gears.

I hear what your sayin....but I am way beyond that. I am definately looking for more torque and hp

I have 3 gearing combos for the different tracks in CO, and agree it is a huge factor!

On my last bike ('03 CRF450) I had good luck with the Wiseco hi comp piston, stage 2 Hotcam and head porting by a friend of mine. Since your in Colorado, I suggest you PM Burned (Eddie Sisneros) as I believe he lives in the same area.

I'm leaving my YZ450 stock (with a Dr. D pipe) as it makes plenty of power for me on a track. If I want more power, I get on my KX500.

If you just want more peak power, your options are fairly wide open. If you find someone who really knows the cylinder head, porting is one of the best bets there is, because by itself, it has no reliability downside other than the extra strain caused by the gained power.

If you are looking for power in a particular place in the curve, you need to focus on one or all of 4 things.

> Compression (increases power most at the lower end of the scale)

> A different ignition map (Vortex, etc.)

> A custom designed exhaust focused on mid range power.

> A set of cams with indexable sprockets so that the lobe centers can be adjusted.

A stock YZ450 produced 49.75 hp on Eddie Sisneros' dyno at 5000 feet. Add maybe 1.25 for your pipe, and maybe 2 for VP U4, you could be looking at 53 just like that.

Hey 700 are you now wishing that you had choosen the CRF? I am just curious because I bought the YZ as well and am having serious regret. I just cant get comfortable on it and it pushes, almost to the point where I am considering selling it and buying a Honda.

How much you want for it??

I am going to ride it one more time and try to get it set up. If i dont like it I will let you know. I honestly haven't given it enough time, but the 2x that I rode it I wasnt comfortable.
I don't know what sort of soil you're working with, but I'll guess it isn't hardpack. The OEM D739 won't work on anything softer than dirty asphalt, and may be a big part of the trouble. You probably knew that, though. If it's an '06, try the following:

>Raise the bars by at least 6mm unless you are a very small individual

>Set the sag at 95-97mm

> Pull the forks up in the clamps to the first line (5mm or so)

> Change the front tire to a D952.

If it's an '07. Do the same thing except for the handlebars and the rear sag, which should be set nearer 100mm in that case.

The difference over "as delivered" with these simple changes is astounding. Play with it a little; the chassis is quite sensitive to little changes.

hey thanks for the suggestions. Its an '07 and I am 6'1, 210lbs. Its pretty slick back here now with the weather so maybe that had a lot to do with it. I did raise the forks up to the first line, ran 12psi in the stock tires and I put my Fasstco bars on along with Fastway pegs in the low postion. Everything else is stock and I havent checked my sag yet which is a big deal, so its probably not fair to evaluate it yet.

I really like my YZF, but I know what your sayin. I am 6', I got the universal upper clamp which moved my bars forward....directly over the clickers, and I raised my bars 10mm. You got to try this set up before giving up cause it lets me get way forward on the bike, and I ride overall more toward the front now. I dont now how i rode without this SU, it feels 100% better.

Huck, to be honest I am getting nervous about the first Big race on the YZF.

Thanks gray, actually eddie is dyno-ing my bike here soon. Any suggestions on the port job.......Tokyo?

You need to be careful who does your port work. The guy who has been helping me with my 05' YZ450 used to be the R and D guy for HotCams. He says that the way the head flows in critical to the performance of the bike. When I got my 05' some hack had been at the head, and basically ruined it by removing too much material. The hack was supposed to be a expert head guy.

When I got the bike, it had HotCams already in it, the crappy head work, Jardine Supermoto pipe, and a fresh stock piston in it. It made 49 HP on the dyno. We replaced the stock piston with a CP Piston at 14:1. It then made 53 HP after dialing in the jetting a little better. With the proper head work, and better fuel, it should do much better than that. maybe in the 55 to 56 hp range.

Try to contact Tony Tice, he had worked for Yamaha, and now runs a Yamaha shop here in Iowa. He has a website through which you should be able to reach him. www.ticeman.com Tony had a 98' YZ400 motor that put 62 HP to the tire. He knows his thumpers. BTW it was stuffed into a YSR50 chasis.

I just ordered the RG3 top clamp with the 3mm forward, 5mm rise. Hopefully it will help and the Fasst bars seem to have a bit of rise to them to begin with. I am going back and forth on whether I should have ordered the 22mm clamp set up.
