2000 yz426 trail mod questions

I have had my 426 for almost 10 months and I have installed quite a few trail friendly parts already. Right now I am thinking of getting a Steahly flywheel weight(need to know which size and how to install and balance) possibly a W.E.R. fender mounted steering dampener (Need advice on that) also maybe in a year or two a Dr.D exaust for even more low end punch, and maybe some fastaway footpegs, also what's your guys's opinions on the Devol metal front disk guard, I've heard mixed reviews on it. So far I have focused on hillclimb/trail mods but I want to run harescrambles so I'd like to hear your guys's race setups. Right now I have Unabiker Rad gaurds, Utah skid plate, rear caliper and disk guard, getting frame guards, 1 1/8 risers/adapters with Renthal Fatbars, and Emgo handguards. Also I'd like to hear how to get these fat 426's handling better and maybe a little bit better suspension. I was thinking about a Clarke or IMS tank but I can ride pretty hard for like 4 to 5 hours and still have 1/3 tank left so I don't think i really need one too badly. SO LET'S HEAR YOUR GUYS'S TRAIL SETUPS ESPECIALLY 426's!!!!!!!

Im in the Desert, so its a little different, but I have Devol Rad guards, Utah skid plate, kickstand, and an IMS tank for now. Id get some handguards or ASV levers as well. IMS over Clarke for the tank IMO.

I ride my '02 426 in the woods of North Carolina and I run with a:
12oz. Steahly FW weight
14/51 gearing
Scott's steering damper
Devol rad and disc guards
WC skid plate
Moose hand guards
revalved and resprung suspension
IMS footpegs
Promoto spark arrestor
Maxxis IT rear and SI front tires
450 cam mod
I love this set-up and can't think of anything I would change, bike still even does well on the MX track.:worthy:

Yeah, for the desert, I ride 14/47 gearing, Maxxis IT tires, and revalved suspension as well. (Pro Circuit). Im soon getting a sterring stabilizer, and Dr. D exhaust as well.

MSR Handguards, ThumperTalk skidplate, ASV's, 13/50 or 14/50 gearing depending on where I'm going to ride, rad. guards, auto decomp. cam, and best of all a Rekluse...it's incredible.

Pro Taper bars, pro grip 791, enduro eng. hand guards, dr. d full exhast really helps with hills adding lower end power, and when ups will get it here:foul: renthal spockets with gold regenia o-ring chain.
And on the bar there in is one of those 1 1/8 bar setups.

Here is a short list of the things that I like on my trail machine.

First and foremost....REKLUSE
rear hand brake, Rekluse needed.
18" rear wheel
Unabikers
revalved, resrpung suspension
12-52 gearing
wide pegs
Powermadd Handguards
good O-ring chain
IRC VE tires
spark arrestor

larger tank and steering damper on the wish list.

I agree with black n blue "First and foremost....REKLUSE" i just put one on my '02 426 with the help of the guys in this forum. I LOVE IT!!! i also run lower gearing than most with 12-53 gearing. i have a 14oz. steahly flywheel weight as well. these come with full instructions,tap,spacers,bolts,etc...just follow the directions. this bike will not stall. i swear this bike will pull stumps out of the ground if i chained one to the subframe. o-ring chain, moose bark busters,fmf powercore 2, still working on softening up the yz suspension for tight woods riding. sound like you're off to a great start, have fun

I run Hare Scrambles on the east coast, and run:
Rekluse auto clutch
Protaper bars with Cyrca guards cut to 29" wide (including bark busters)
WER steering stabilizer
Maxi cross intermidiate tires
14/51 gearing
Power bomb header, modded mid pipe and T4 can
Works very well

Did you already have the flywheel weight on when you installed the Rekluse? I cant see any need for both (or for the weight once the Rekluse is installed). Just curious.

2 questions, I can't find a 14oz. steahly weight the biggest i think I can find is in Rocky Mountain MC I think it's like 12oz. Also do you need to send it out to get it balanced or does it not matter? Rekluse would be very nice but don't have the money. I want a steering stabilizer first because the last few times I've been out riding I've gotten a pretty nasty headshake goin up hills or through whoops. Like heading up one fairly smooth hill I pulled through 3rd good and hit 4th and just twisted it all the way but the front end started getting light and dancing uncontrollably. I run 13/51 gearing on my bike and o-ring chain also. Also after getting my stabilizer I would like to raise my forks up in the clamps to help low speed handling, what is your guys's thoughts on that?

I installed a 12 oz. flywheel and two extra rear teeth on my 02 426 months prior to installing the Rekluse and although the flywheel and gearing change helped smooth things out, it was nearly meaningless compared to the difference the Rekluse made--night and day. If I had it to do over again, I would not bother with either the gearing change or the flywheel, I would just do the Rekluse. It's absolutely astounding how easy it makes it to rip through tight stuff and hills I used to get stuck on.

you can do a straight swap of your rear spring for a WR spring if you can get one, and softer race tech fork springs, i did that and love the suspension for woods. I also put on an elextrex lighting coil and used a stock WR flywheel.

SRC high pressure rad cap to keep from boiling over
if you want a larger tank you can also put on a stock WR tank and seat combo you can usually find used on ebay and is cheaper then a new larger IMS tank, i got my WR seat and tank combo for under 100 dollars that way you'll have reserve fuel tank as well.

i also run the WR headlight with the lighting coil and a rear enduro tail light you can just buy the piece that is a light/mud flap/licence plate holder and bolt it right to your yz tail.

and i run 13/52 and never have problems stalling between that and the WR flywheel

And I forgot to mention the best mod of all for the YZ in the woods. Change out your petcock to the WR one with the reserve, it's all of $20 and worth every penny.

I have a question for everyone who has road a 2000 426 were the front frorks super stiff? My friend had a rm-z 250 and his front end was very soft compaired to mine. On my 426 it's pretty hard to push down on the front. Just wandering if I need to change the oil in the forks or it is supposed to be that stiff.

The absolute best mod for trail riding is a Rekluse auto clutch. If you can't afford one right now, then save your money. :thumbsup:

Did you already have the flywheel weight on when you installed the Rekluse? I cant see any need for both (or for the weight once the Rekluse is installed). Just curious.

I'm lazy & i hate restarting this beast on hillsides

Check the steahly website if you can't find it here @tt store. they sell the entire 14oz flywheel assm. or flywheel wieght-that you add to your stock fwhl. you cannot mess it up IF you follow the directions supplied. no balancing required. just a tip-use a good drill bit,not the cheap one supplied. there's a 12oz one on ebay auction right now. as for the front end getting light & shaking- i don't have that problem-unless f wheel is airborn . check out tammie's mod if your suspension's too harsh. i'm trying that this weekend
