yzf426 3rd gear blown

Recommended Posts

right so went out for first spin on my new tool today only to find 3rd gear is not there :worthy: and was also sold the bike as an 02 model where it turns out its a 2000, so anyway, will be tearing down soon to sort the gears but what exactly am i going to have to change, have read other posts on same story but need to know what bits to order? i know youll say wait until ive split the cases but would like an idea of what others have had to change?

cheers

If 3rd gear is "not there" at all, as in, an extra neutral, that sounds like a broken gear. That will usually mean both 3rd gears, and probably the 5th countershaft gear, and shift fork 1. You could also expect to find a lot of metal in things, so look for damage caused by that to anything else in the engine, especially the oil pump. Also flush the tank.

got half a 3rd as in it goes but jumps id say ive probably got half the teeth missing, yea im more concerned about where the bits of teeth have ended up , guess i'll see when ive got it apart, has given me an idea though as in that i most likely will need new shifter fork, assumed i would need both new gears,

cheers!

I'll second what grayracer said, bent shift fork. You'll have to replace at least two gears and a shift fork. Parts aren't too expensive but you'll have to split the cases so if you take it in to get fixed expect a lot of labor $$$$$$.

Sorry to hear about your ride. I had the same issue but with 5th gear. It was just as grayracer described. The Dogs (features on the side of the gears that enguage with eachother) on the gears get worn and won't engage. If you are lucky the dogs will just be really worn and there won't be much extra metal in your engine. If the dogs broke off like in my case there could be some added damage. If you kept riding on the bike after 3rd was gone then your chances are higher for more damage. Expect to replace any other worn gears. The gear faces get pited and if you don't replace them you will start loosing teeth off gears.

I would replace all of the shift forks. Given that your 3rd gear is gone I would imagine that the transmission was not treated well. If the shift forks are slightly bent then your gears could not be fully enguaging, hense your 3rd gear issue. Shift forks are relatively cheap and are very important and make the transmission feel so much smoother.

It sounds like the person you got the bike from wasn't very honest with you. His bad karma will come back to F him over some day.

Also, get a magnetic drain plug. If parts of gears break off, the magnet on the drain plug will grab them and prevent them from floating around in your motor in the future.

Hey guys

I have not had a problem with my 426 yet, but my buddy blew 3rd as well, sounds the same. Has not pulled it down yet, so I will be interested to see what happened and let all know.

My question is where do I find a mag drain plug for the WR, I have heard of them for XR's.

Cheers:ride: ?
