XR650R footpeg issue

Recommended Posts

I've seen posts about a problem with the right footpeg on the XR650Rs. My question is does the problem still exist on the '06 model? :worthy: Santa may be coming a little early this year and I'd like to know what I might be getting into. Yes, I'm fat (over 300 lbs) and don't want a foot peg coming off when I least expect it to happen.

Thanks in advance,

Jay

The problem does exist on the '06....as well as the '07.

Get it fixed. Might save your butt. I've broken them at least 5 times.

There have been no changes to the XR650R in this department since it has been introduced, so yes, you may have a problem, but I doubt it. I have had troubles with mine (I'm floating around 270+ myself), but I also do hard time on MX tracks with my 650R (I 'race' in the Vet Pro class). Since you also have a 500AF in your arsenal, I think that it would be a cold day in %^&* before your 650R saw that kind of abuse. I have hopes to pick up a 500AF next year for this exact purpose. If not, I will end up buying another 650 to ride as my old one will be effectively dystroyed.

If you check the bolts regularly, say every time you change the oil, you'll be okay. Just change the bolts out if they are even the remote bit loose (they are beginning to stretch and bend at this point). You can also go with the modified peg mount from 1x International if you are really worried about it.

Thanks all for the info, I'd pretty much thought this was the case but want to check with the experts.

eastreich - I just plan to use the 650 for woods and fire roads; I'm too much of a CR500 junky for the MX tracks even though I have pushed my XR400 around some. You'll definitely like a CR500 AF if you're on a wide open MX track. It can be a workout if you try to run tracks that are tight and/or have a lot of SX style obstacles.

Call up AHD: http://www.animalhousedesigns.net/products.htm

I had the 1X fix on my 03 until I bent the peg perch bad enough to need a new one. Kritter at AHD sent me one of his and not only is it cheaper than the 1X, I think, it is a better piece. It mounts up clean and leaves more of a gap between the frame rail and the engine.

I just put the AHD fix on my new bike last night. Mounted up clean. Confidence inspiring.

My buddy broke his off riding desert(not racing) and he's only about 250-260lbs.

My bolts had loosened up twice, been replaced once, and after my buddys broke, I fabed & welded up the same type of cure for both of our bikes.

I did mine for free, but If I couldn't I still would have payed to have it done...You WILL have bolt stretching issues at the very least...

  • 2 months later...

sorry for the ressurection and possible repost, still working out my own foot peg problem...

It seems that most break the FRONT bolt?

mine broke the rear bolt which it seems cannot be drilled out to through bolt, the broken bolt is being a real pain to extract but its gotta come out, my problem is that if i mess up the threads i think i might be screwed...

any help would be great.

After wiping out my bike on the right side the peg bolts were bent and obviously weakened. I ordered the AHD fix and don't have to worry about it breaking any more.:censored:

Buddy of mine used this set up and the weld broke after a couple of months. He took it off and had the weld ground off and rewelded so far so good. I used the PC set up that so many dissed and it's still workin. I did notice on both set ups that the bracket is a little tight on the case so I rounded mine off a bit for more clearance.
