Dave's Mods

Recommended Posts

I am rebuilding a 93 XR650L and have run into several problems. First I am having an electical problem that is intermittent and killing me. Second when the bike would run for a brief period of time it ran good and the throttle response when whicking the throttle was perfect, no bog, building revs quickly etc. Before I discovered the electrical problem was causing the bike to die, I figured it msut be fuel related and I rebuilt the carb doing Dave's mods, drilling slide holes to 5/32", shimming needle jet .030 and rejetting with 60/162 jets (uncorked with T-4 exhaust) at 2500'. Now when I can get the bike to start (see my other post) it wants to hesitate or bog when I whick the throttle, almost die as if it is jetted way too rich, the slide is opening way too fast, the midrange is way too rich. My question is, what should I do first, try a leaner main, leaner pilot, take the shim out of the needle or just shoot myself in the other foot, cause I can't undrill the slide. Any suggestions. Everyone raved about the Dave mods, am I in a bad way, do you think drilling the slide is causing the bog, hesitation or is it jetting??? Help, I sure don't wan't to buy a new slide and start over.

Thanks for the replies. Would it being too rich cause it to die when I whick the throttle. It will rev through the range if I roll it on slowly, but it dies when I whack it (no smart remarks here). Thanks for the help. By the way are you the XR650 Dave who is famous for the mods, if so :worthy:

Somehow the mods got named after me, but I didn't think 'em up- I just pulled together the existing body of knowledge and wrapped it all up together.

The info all came from the yahoo XRLUG group- think of 'em as the XRLUG mods!
