building a xr650l to be a light weight beast!!

show me a 60mm single and i would be glad to try it, i'm starting to wonder about this site and it seems like there is alot of smarts ass people with useless comments about grammer and engine theory and they are so lost but they continue to blow crap with every breath and i think i have heard enough and i will be moving on with my 40 years of knowledge and i hope the serious thumpers will remove the trolls from this site. bye!!!:worthy:

The thing about the dual carb heads is that they flow better than the single carb heads. The head has more to do with the performance than than the dual carbs. Yes the dual carbs are much more of a pain to get right. When you do get them right they do work great. The dual carbs will only do good if you use the matching dual carb head. When the XR600 went to the single carb head it lost 5 to 7 or so hosespower.

If you go with the XL600 head, remember that this will increase your compression. Since you are already using a 10.25:1 piston, the resulting compression should be around 11:1. This will most likely require higher octane race fuel. This is especially true if you are at low altitude, and by my measure all of North Carolina is at low altitude. Without that race gas the piston may fry.

I'm with you on the reliability factor. I like my air cooled XR600. Something I once heard from an old Apollo engineer. "the most reliable part is the one I didn't use." No radiator and cooling system to break, and no battery to fail. The only time I want a electric start is when I'm hurt in a crash, or stuck on a crazy hill. The rest of the time I have no issue with the kickstart.

I'm not trying to be a troll, but the only thing we know about you is your posts. This includes not only the content, but the grammer too. Your content is great. The presentation could be better. It might not seem like it, but this is really one of the most troll free zones around. I guess your post kind of drew them out.

Good luck, it sounds like a cool project to me.

Hey Glenn6109 don't give up on this site due to some criticism. I really want to see this bike done up. You've got to expect to be a little thick skinned when replies are basically anonymous. I used to have an L & my brother in law loves his. Lets see the final results!

Hey Glenn6109. Stay around for a while. I want to see your finished product so I can steal some good ideas from you.:worthy:

What's the point in doing the same thing everybody else does? Sometimes it's cool to go against popular opinion. Hopefully, you can teach us all something. Maybe next year everybody on this board will be talking about doing Glenn's Mods instead of Dave's Mods.

I just built a aluminum kick stand for my xr650L it about half the weight of a stock one and it looks better .

Glenn

Keep up the great work - I went hog wild with my XR600 and went toward where you've come from - electric start etc.

You're going to purposely ADD dual carbs to this bike? Why not a single pumper?

Calm down. It was a legitimate question. Forgive me for not knowing it all already. :D

Thank you XRMARTY for making my point clearer than I was able to.

I just finish reading your thread (Too Many Caps:naughty: ) I could swear that I've seen posts about dual carbs and how awful they are. Mainly, they are a nightmare to get in synch; unsteady idle; and difficult jetting. Nevertheless, it'll be interesting to see them on the xl. Let us know how it goes. And pics please!
