How about an 02 WR 426. These were solid and dependable. I also have a very nice one for sale.

My 03 has been trouble free in the 2 years I've had it. The 04 starter upgrade, at about $200, was the only non-performance mod that I've done, but I didn't have any symptoms or any signs that the "dealer fix" had been done, either. I just did it for peace of mind.
Don't be afraid of the earlier models, but be sure the seller took good care of it. Just get the newest and/or best maintained bike you can afford, i.e. my reigiously maintained 03 would be a better choice than a beat 05 that had oil changes once a season.

I have the very first WR 450 of any other Thumpertalk member and I have NOT done the stater mod as I have had zero problems with anything.
I have over 5000 miles on it and it's been trouble free.

Not so true of the '04's as the 03's. '04 was the last year of the big(er) tank too I believe.

If you're on a budget, then try and pick up an 04. Otherwise an 03 that has had the starter mod done is the same bike.

As previously suggested, a well looked after 426 is a perfectly good bike if you can live without the magic button. You can do a camshaft mod to those which gets rid of the decomp lever and allows you to simply boot the bike over no worries, thats worth looking into
