I don't know WHY I bought it (traded for it) but here's the latest project for me. A 1978 RM 80, first year of the 80. Why would a 40 year old man want an 80? Because I traded it for a $60 socket set, that's why! I'm gonna poke away at it in my spare time and restore it a bit I think. My wife thinks I'm disturbed...

final steps: new gas, crank oil, filter change, chain lube

So I tore her down to frame/motor, and greased lightning'd everything, hit gently with a powerwasher after covering the engine holes, and greased all the bearings up

Turned out very nice (with my 400 on the right)

I remember looking at them in a Suzuki shop brand new back in the day.

I was I think about 7 years old and seeing the JR50's as well.

Times have changed!

Sorry missed the right pic.

I remember when I was 7 years old seeing this at a Suzuki dealership I am sure that is now longer around and the RM125/RM250 back then.

Being a dealer now trying to sell $7000~$8000 4 stroke bikes would be like trying to sell land in Detroit city, NO one wants it!

The 2004 - 2008 RM250's got upgraded Showa suspension, and your bike has Kayaba, so it's a 2003, or older.   No big deal, but in case you still thought possibly an '04 model year...

Its an 04 with showa all around... What exactly makes it look like kayaba? Just curious...   I love this bike and will be on an RM for awhile.... Every person that I have let ride it say its the best suspension they have ever ridden and I agree with a big smile...  A few guys with new KTMs are now in the market for rm's as a second bike..

Red shock spring.....kyb. Red was stock.
04/05 has yellow shock spring stock.

Your front brake hose line is also going around the bottom of the fork.....in 04 they had one clamp on the fork guard....and then it connects to the caliper from the rear.

Your back rotor is "holed"...I can't see the front rotor......01-02 were slotted....03 & + were holed.

Picked up this cherry 05 set up for scrambles for $1500.It has barely been ridden and has everything for woods except tank, rad guards, and pipe guard.   I have ridden it twice and it is my favorite bike so far and I believe i will be sticking with RM's.  Its predictable, very stable, and of course its got the cornering.  previous bikes, 2010 KTM 250xc/sx with everything possible minus rekluse, 2009 200xc decked out, woods ready rmz450, yzf250, kx 250...I have ridden most every bike that "suits" my type of riding and this rm amazes every outing

Kayaba's 01-03
Front brake hose routing 99-03
Tapered swingarm 02-up
Side number plate style 01-02
Drilled rotors 03-up

Verdict: It's an 03 with the wrong years side panels (they interchange). Same person threw on FX 05 graphics and seat. Might want to check your steering head.  You have Kayaba's based on how the shock resevoir looks alone. It's a different size than Showas. If you still firmly believe it's an 04 you may want to ask whoever you bought it from why they put on older suspension and front brake line. Nice bike.
