last 3 rides on piggie, ktm neglected

Recommended Posts

I got sick of the maintenance on my KTM. Last week I rode 60 mi of Clear Creek on the 650R, yesterday 30 mi of Carnegie, today 45 miles of Hollister. I just got to the point I didn't want to adjust the KTM valves again, change the oil, etc. I rode mostly gnarly single track with my 13/51 gearing and IRC M5b. The gnarliest trails at Clear Creek, Happiness Valley at Carnegie and the MotoCross track, all the tracks at Hollister, did Troll trail 3 times. The piggie took it all and asked for more. One of these days I'll ride the KTM again, I suppose.

I've have the same going on here but it's a CRF450 that's collecting dust.

I've got a KX250 that I ride more often than the CRF, I just don't want to deal with the maintenance on the 450 and I won't "just let it go" if it gets ridden it gets serviced.

As soon as my "Piggie" is in one piece again I'm sure the KX will start collecting dust as well.....anybody interested in a '03 CRF450?

That's funny. I have ridden/raced my 650R all year to prepare for Baja. My KTM has been sitting.....has a whole 30 miles put on it this year. I dusted it off to get it ready to take to Baja and took it out for a ride. I forgot just how sweet that bike really is. Puts the 650R to shame. It actually turns! I had thought I was starting to like the 650R till I got on the 525 again. For me, the BRP will go up for sale after baja.

To each their own...

My dealer gave me a 525EXC as a demo to ride at my leisure. I put about 10 miles on it over the last 3 months and over 1000 on my 650R. That KTM just doesn't feel right to me. Too twitchy for my tastes and the power just doesn't compare to my pig. But hey, if you love the orange, go for the orange. As long as you don't get a set of training wheels (aka ATV) I think we're all okay with it!

I don't think you get my point. It's the maintenance on the KTM. I ride a lot. On the KTM, oil changes/valve adjustments come at 15 hours and it Needs them by then. And it'll probably need valves replaced at 300 hours, if it makes it that far. Now the KTM needs a clutch. And the BRP is so good, so fun, I don't mind riding it at all. It's heavy but I like getting a good workout, I'm getting Strong. I'll ride the KTM once in a while, but for 90% of my riding the 650R is better because I can ride it a lot, just ride, not work on the darn thing! We're talkin 10 hours a weekend, week after week, year after year, it probably has 15-20k on it and it's never been rebuilt and it runs strong. If I rode the KTM, I'd be workin on it every other weekend instead of riding. It's like comparing a 427 Chevy to a Ferarri. One's high maintenance.. and one's pure muscle. Oh yea, I've done 3 LA/Barstow to Vegas rides, 2 Sheetirons, 3 trips to monterey on the freeway on the pig.. and tore up the MX track last weekend. This is the swiss army knife, energizer bunny bike, it's amazing and fast. To top it off, it's still winning races!

motochris, you must just be going out there for some recreational riding or you'd be on the pig:thumbsup:

Both bikes are going to Baja actually. I'll pre-run on my BRP and my buddy will ride my KTM. Our race bike is a 650R as well.....hence the reason for me riding one all year.

We're in Class 30 (30+ Pro) bike 304x.....root us on.

...and I know some desert guys that would do the same for a Pa. ride. It's always better where you haven't been. I used to ride the "spilly piles" (that's what the locals called a mining pit) in Pa. when I was a kid. Hodaka Super Rat...good times.
